Peso Pluma Before and After: The Mexican Singer Shows Off a New Haircut

"Is he going to release an album?" is what many fans are wondering after this change

Over the past year, Mexican artist Peso Pluma has kept a relatively low profile compared to the media explosion we saw in 2023. The Jalisco-born singer, whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, is only 26 years old, but in the past two years he has become a true global icon of Mexican music, going through several artistic phases. It seems that with this new hairstyle, another phase might be coming.

Peso Pluma broke onto the scene with original and unique corridos tumbados, a very distinctive genre also popularized by artists like Natanael Cano. It’s a mix of traditional Mexican music styles with urban rhythms and aesthetics (though by now, who doesn’t know this genre, given its rapid growth since Peso Pluma’s international breakthrough?).

When he released Génesis in 2023, he had already launched the massive hit Ella Baila Sola, which in April of that year became the highest-charting Regional Mexican song in the U.S., reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. In just three years of his international career, the artist has won 21 awards, including a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album. Everyone started to know who Peso Pluma was—or as he likes to call himself, “la doble P.” One of his most recognizable symbols has always been his hair.

Peso Pluma Before and After: A Look for Every Artistic Phase

When he rose to fame in 2023, Peso Pluma was around 23 years old and sported a striking mullet, which is a hairstyle that is short in the front and on the sides, and long in the back. The popular phrase describing it is: “business in the front, party in the back.” It became very popular in the ’80s and early ’90s, especially among rock and pop musicians and athletes, and has since had several comebacks as a retro or alternative trend.

When Peso Pluma became famous, this haircut regained popularity. The artist’s inspiration may come from rock icons like Mick Jagger, a musician he greatly admires, who has also sported this style.

After the Génesis era—which also included his breakup with Nicki Nicole—Peso Pluma cut his hair, adopting a new look reminiscent of Tommy Lee. This style fit perfectly with the release of his collaboration TOMMY Y PAMELA with Mexican artist Kenia OS, who is also his girlfriend at the moment.

Now it seems the singer is taking another step forward in his aesthetic, and possibly in his art. On August 21, Peso Pluma posted a video on his TikTok account showing his new shaved haircut to nearly 8 million followers. Gone is the long mullet and fade; now the Jalisco-born artist sports a fully shaved look—a move that often signals upcoming changes and potential new projects. Could this shift also reflect a new phase in his music?

But what evidence is there that Peso Pluma might be working on a new album? The truth is, the singer hasn’t given any clear hints about releasing a new studio project since ÉXODO came out in 2024. However, we know that many moves on artists’ social media accounts often signal upcoming developments in their music as well.
