Nowadays, it’s hard to find someone on planet Earth who hasn’t heard of Young Miko. At just 25 years old, María Victoria Ramírez Arellano (real name) has managed to carve out her own space in the music world as a global reggaeton star.
In just five years of her career, Miko has climbed to the top of music charts after gaining global recognition with her viral hit «Lisa» last March. She has also collaborated with some of the industry’s biggest artists. Now, she has just launch a collaboration with one of the top producers in the scene, Bizarrap. Nothing less than BZRP Music Sessions #58!
Now, being honest, was this a collaboration that was expected? We take the opportunity to analyze why the artist has become the new protagonist of one of the most coveted formats in the scene.
Young Miko officially entered the music scene in 2019 by uploading music to the wonderful platform that is SoundCloud, where she recorded her first song, «Quiero,» and later collaborated with Caleb Calloway on «105 Freestyle.» However, her first solo single was «Puerto Rican Mami,» and later, in 2022, she released her debut album, Trap Kitty.
Miko became the center of attention that same summer when her compatriot and genre superstar Bad Bunny invited her to participate in one of his concerts at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico during his «Un Verano Sin Ti» tour. Her name would start resonating more and more until it exploded with her viral TikTok song in March 2023, «Lisa.» Who doesn’t know the famous chorus of the trend «Hablando claro, tengo un problema, y es que rápido me enchulo de las nenas»? A single that has accumulated more than 169 million streams in less than a year on Spotify.
However, «Lisa» wasn’t the only success that catapulted Miko to another level this past year. «Classy 101,» a song she co-wrote with Caleb Caloway and Julia Lewis and later released with Feid after meeting the Colombian in Los Angeles, also broke several records, winning the LOS40 Music Award for Best Urban Song. We can also point out other hits like «DISPO» with Karol G in her Bichota Season (+75.5 million streams), the explosive «Chulo Pt. 2» (+237 million streams) with Bad Gyal and Tokischa, and of course, «FINA» (+141 million streams) with Bad Bunny as part of his highly anticipated album «nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana» (2023).
With 26.4 million monthly listeners only on the mentioned platform, Miko has become one of the industry’s youngest influential voices, also becoming our breakthrough artist in 2023. However, her global stardom goes beyond the emerging and reaches new heights that the Puerto Rican continues to conquer.
As mentioned, we can listen to BZRP Music Session Vol. 58 since this Wednesday, January 10, which makes both artists start 2024 on a high note. Although Bizarrap is not the most predictable figure in the world, if we look at his recent collaborations, we can identify a specific pattern. The Argentine is a big fan of timing, not only recording with the most well-known or emerging voices but selecting the right moment for each collaboration when both artists are in an interesting phase.
He did it with Shakira, giving us one of the most iconic post-breakup hits in history, also with Quevedo when the Canary Islands artist was starting to stand out in the scene. Also with Milo J, when the Argentine, at just 16 years old, began breaking records on charts. Also with Rauw Alejandro when he was about to release his «Playa Saturno.» Understanding this dynamic, we can grasp why Young Miko is precisely the next protagonist of the anticipated BZRP Music Session. It’s all about talent and timing.
Considering this, it wouldn’t surprise us if in future editions, the Argentine releases collaborations with artists who are experiencing interesting moments in their careers, in terms of success, development, or creative innovation within the urban genre, such as Feid, Saiko, Bad Gyal, or Xavi.
And you, what do you think of this new collaboration?
