«La presión es necesaria para seguirla chingando» («The pressure is necessary to keep on breaking it»), declared Peso Pluma in an interview with the composer Pepe Garza at the beginning of 2023. At that time, it seems that the Mexican hitmaker was already up to what was about to come in the following months.
Much has been said about the Doble P in the last year, but who is behind the massive phenomenon that has taken corridos tumbados to another level?
‘The Doble P’ (real name: Hassan Emilio Kabande Lajia) was born on 15th June 1999 in Jalisco. He grew up around music since he was a little kid and now he has become one of the main exponents of Mexican music worldwide with only 23 years old, thanks to his chart-topping singles and collabs.
His viral ‘Ella Baila Sola‘ ft. Eslabón Armado reached the No.1 position in the US Top 50 on Spotify for several weeks in a row and he also notches other six songs in the chart: ‘La Bebé – Remix‘ featuring Yng Lvcas, ‘PRC‘ with Natanael Cano, ‘AMG’ also with Natanael Cano and Gabito Ballesteros, ‘El Azul‘ with Junior H and his very commented participation in the #55 BZRP Music Session.
The success surrounding Peso Pluma is massive. He has even released other hits with several big names in the industry like Eladio Carrión in ’77’, ‘Por las Noches Remix’ with (now former girlfriend) Nicki Nicole and ‘Chanel’ with Becky G, a song that he performed in Coachella and in the 2023 Latin AMAs.
With the significant increase in his popularity, there are also rumors that Peso Pluma could be preparing explosive future collaborations with hip-hop music icons in the United States like Drake.

How did Peso Pluma became an international phenomenon? In 2020, he finally decided to present his talent worldwide through the album ‘Ah y Qué?’, which contains his popular collab ‘Relajado Voy’ with Decreto Real. His voice got even further with ‘El Belicón’ featuring Raúl Vega.

Peso Pluma started becoming popular in 2022 and has already made his own contributions to the genre. He revealed in a recent interview that his music has influences of the US hip hop and rap scene, due to his past living in the United States. As he stated, he’s becoming a main referent for all the ‘morrillos‘ (Mexican term to refer to young people) that want to become artists too.
The explosive hit ‘Ella Baila Sola’ changed everything, taking his music to another level and making his music more popular for the big audiences. He also had the opportunity to present the song in The Tonight Show of Jimmy Fallon.
Doble P has also a big presence in social and streaming platforms, with more than 50 million monthy listeners on Spotify and 8.7 million followers on Instagram.
But, why ‘Peso Pluma’? According to the interview with Pepe Garza, his name has nothing to do with boxing. “Because of THC feathers. That thing was quite popular at the time and we all had a thin complexion. When we went to a show in Guadalajara and met Marco Antonio, who was the champion of this weight type. We said: ‘that’s destiny, we get this name’», he explained.
The Mexican phenomenon is only 24 years old to possess such a degree of fame. His height, which is one of the characteristics that stands out, is approximately 5 feet 10 inches.
The latest known relationship of Peso Pluma has been with the Argentine trap star Nicki Nicole, which reportedly lasted less than a year. Both artists ended the relationship after a viral scandal suggesting the Mexican’s infidelity with another woman, who was filmed in Las Vegas, the influencer Sahar Sonia.
The Doble P has recently announced an upcoming US tour named Exodo, which shares its name with his next studio album set to release in May. The Jalisco-born artist will even be headlining at the Coachella festival 2024.
