The Spanish star sits down with Penélope Cruz for the November cover of Vogue Spain

Rosalía and the Oscar Award-winning Spanish actress Penélope Cruz first met in 2019 while filming the movie «Dolor y Gloria,» directed by Pedro Almodóvar. They shared a beautiful scene together, singing by the river. It was at that moment that a lovely friendship based on admiration and respect was born, and it continues to this day. Proof of the good vibes between them is the latest interview the Catalan singer has done for the November cover of Vogue Spain. The interview was conducted by the actress herself.

The interview, featuring incredible photographs by Katie Burnet, takes us on a journey through Rosalía’s career. Cruz serves as the co-pilot, guiding her through various points in her life. It’s undoubtedly a delightful conversation to read.

From the very first moment they met, these two Spanish stars felt a connection. Rosalía recalls, «Do you remember the first time we met? It was at that lunch in a little village near where the movie was filmed, do you remember? I was walking with Pedro, and then you arrived, and that’s when we were introduced.»

The two artists also discussed the issue of misogyny in trap and reggaeton lyrics. Penélope Cruz praised how Rosalía addresses these themes in her songs but couldn’t understand why there are so many songs with «such a blatantly sexist message.» The singer of «BESO» responded as follows:

«I’ve always made music thinking about what I would have needed to hear. The other day, I was talking to a friend about whether art can be deliberately militant or if it simply arises from an artist’s need and then becomes political by how it resonates with people. Sometimes, I have more questions than answers. Being a Libra, I’m always trying to balance the scales. If I feel that there’s a predominance of male energy in the world and I believe I can counteract that, I’m going to try to leave my mark. But I’m also trying not to be afraid of irreverence because, in the end, what’s important is to be true to yourself as an artist.»

Moreover, the Spanish diva has revealed she’ll attend the Latin Grammys ceremony in Seville next November 16. «Hey, the Latin Grammys are taking place in Seville this year, are you coming, right?» Penélope Cruz asks. «Yes, are you going?» Rosalía responds. «Honestly, I’d like to,» the actress concludes.

Rosalía Talks About What She Has Prepared

The most anticipated question, especially for Rosalía’s fans, is the one Penélope Cruz asked at the end of the interview. The actress wanted to know if we’ll be hearing something new soon. The Catalan singer replied:

«I’ve been working on a couple of songs, one of them is a collaboration, and the other is mainly to keep in touch with my songwriter side, but not with the intention of shaping the project just yet. During the tour, the energy is very different; you’re a nomad, always on the move. And still, somehow, I managed to make music. Now I’m trying to have fun again.»

The collaboration is with the Icelandic artist Björk, and it’s called «Oral,» set to be released this month. As for the other song, we don’t have any hints about it yet.

The best part of it all was the ending, when Rosalía invited Penélope Cruz to record something with her in the studio. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them working together at some point. In fact, Penélope Cruz has sung in movies like «Nine» and in collaborations such as «Decirnos adiós» with Miguel Bosé.

In the interview, Rosalía also revealed which song almost didn’t make it onto her second studio album, «El Mal Querer.» It’s Penélope Cruz’s favorite, none other than «Bagdad.» Rosalía said, «At the time, as it was a more pop-structured song, I hesitated whether to include it in ‘El mal querer.’ Can you believe it?»

Fortunately, the artist decided to include it, and the song has become one of her fans’ favorites. Penélope Cruz and Rosalía undeniably exude chemistry in every line of this interview. Hopefully, we’ll get to see this camaraderie in the studio.
