After nearly 35 years in a successful professional career, many might think it’s hard to surpass oneself, that there’s any dream left to fulfill… Well, Shakira has shown that even if you’re a global superstar who has broken all records, you can still achieve new successes.
On this Tuesday, March 26th, the artist experienced something incredible in New York City. As we previously reported on LOS40 USA this week, the Colombian legend was preparing a big surprise for NYC, and what a surprise it was!
With the release of her 12th studio album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women No Longer Cry), the interpreter of «Copa Vacía» and her team organized a very special celebration in the city that never sleeps, a gift for all her fans, but also for herself. An event co-produced together with TSX Entertainment, and with presenting partners ViX, Vinfast and Sony Music Latin.
Her highly anticipated studio work has broken records with a x7 platinum RIAA certification on the same day of its release, surpassing 10 billion streams and already becoming the most listened-to album of 2024.
There’s nothing like presenting your songs live to the audience, but if you do it on one of the huge screens in Times Square, even better. It all started hours earlier, Shakira posted on her social media that she was expecting everyone who wanted to stop by at 7:15 pm E.T. on the famous street. Additionally, she also announced that it would be streamed live for the rest of the world. The promotional image showed her next to a wolf, undoubtedly a declaration that she was ready to make the entire city howl.
The followers of the Barranquilla native began to gather in Times Square where they found a giant screen with one of the album’s promotional photographs and a QR code for streaming. But there was also a countdown, yes, a New Year’s Eve countdown months in advance.
What an insane experience!! 40,000 of you in Times Square, I have goosebumps! Thank you for such an amazing welcome and for coming to party with me NY! #ShakiraTSX #LMYNL https://t.co/0Y07e3osOR pic.twitter.com/xfjNsQeVMo

Although the event was announced with only a few hours’ notice, the event organizers reported that over 40,000 people gathered at the well-known intersection. «What an insane experience!! 40,000 of you in Times Square, I have goosebumps! Thank you for such an amazing welcome and for coming to party with me NY!» wrote the Colombian on her X (formerly Twitter) account.
When the clock struck 00:00, people started cheering, although they weren’t very sure what would happen, everyone was very excited. A diamond-covered she-wolf burst onto the screen and made everyone in Times Square tremble.
The animal merged with Shakira’s image as it roared, and doors opened on the screen. At that moment, the singer could be seen on a platform high above as she descended to the ground (similar to the Times Square ball drop on New Year’s Eve). The chords of «Hips Don’t Lie» started playing, and the show began.
This show made New York and the world (following it through streaming) stop and focus on watching the artist who has undergone a «personal rebirth» process before creating her new songs, as she told our colleague and LOS40 host, Cris Regatero, in her latest interview.
«Hello New York! Oh my God, this is amazing, absolutely crazy. It’s wonderful to see you again, sing for you… Nothing compares to this. Thank you so much for all the love you’ve given me this week during the release of my new album ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.’ And thank you, thank you, thank you for being here,» said the singer of «Monotonía» after performing the first song of the night.
Shakira made history in Times Square and nobody will forget the artist’s triumphant return. She also performed other great hits like «Te Felicito,» «TQG,» or the «Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.» «I’m happy to be here surrounded by my Latin people […] Thank you, New York. Until next time. I love you very much,» said the soloist before disappearing from the screen.
And you, have you already watched Shakira’s performance in New York?
