The Correct Order to Listen to Shakira’s New Album «Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran»: Story and Meaning

We tell you all the secrets behind the Colombian legend's latest release, "Women No Longer Cry"

Archivado en: Shakira  •

Shakira’s life seemed like something out of a Hollywood movie: the pop diva who falls in love with the athlete of the moment and they start a beautiful love story.

The thing is, in the movies they never tell you what happens to the couple once the credits roll. Luckily, Shakira has no problem narrating it in her new album: Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran («Women No Longer Cry»). And it’s because the singer has told through 15 songs how her relationship with Gerard Piqué ended after 10 years.

The Colombian, who has returned after El Dorado (2017), has told through her lyrics in this latest release the different life stages she has gone through in recent years: from anger to resentment, passing through acceptance and the reunion with herself. The best part? If you correctly order the songs, you can recreate the entire musical star’s heartbreak story. A story that lacks nothing.

And it’s that, although Women No Longer Cry has an official order, we assure you that if you want to experience this album like the Colombian soap opera it is and find out everything that happened chronologically, you should listen to the album in the following order.

Tracklist to Find Out About the Heartbreak Story

If you still don’t know why we’ve chosen this order, sit down, get comfortable, and let the music take you while you read the following words. Because we are going to explain the whole story of Shakira’s heartbreak with a happy ending: her reunion with herself and her tranquility. A story that goes through all the stages of mourning. Because in the end a breakup is that: the search for oneself.

To Live Happily Ever After Until Monotony Kills Love

This story is not a love story. Well, maybe it is, a love for oneself: for feeling good again after a breakup.

And it’s that the beginning of this journey of Shakira would start with her trapped in a relationship where she is not appreciated. Copa Vacía takes us to a Shakira who still loves her partner and seeks his attention. «Relax here on the couch and give me your attention,» «Put down the phone and use your hands with me,» says the Colombian, trying to get her guy’s attention.

The same theme is addressed in Entre Paréntesis, where the singer and Grupo Frontera talk about a couple who have stopped loving each other. «You can tell when you love, but when you don’t, it shows more,» they sing in unison. But, of course, it’s too late; they’re already slaves to Monotonía. Something that has led them to be complicit in a routine that never ends.

This routine is also reflected in El Jefe, her song with Fuerza Regida: like the protagonist of the song, the Colombian feels like a prisoner of her daily life. «Seven thirty, the alarm has sounded, I feel like being in bed, but I can’t, I take the kids at nine,» says the one from Barranquilla.

What Shakira doesn’t know is that everything is about to change and that this routine is about to go up in smoke.

Hatred, Resentment, and Tears (and a Few Hints)

It is then when everything explodes and the protagonist of the album realizes that she has been living a lie in Te Felicito. That her partner has been cheating on her for some time and that she doesn’t want to continue like this. «Your wound didn’t open my skin, but it did my eyes. They’re red from crying for you,» says the singer.

And it’s that this disappointment grows and ends up exploding in the BZRP Music Session form. The artist already knows that her now ex-partner has another relationship. She also enumerates everything she has done for him over all these years (including living next to her mother-in-law).

This phase continues in TQG. Yes, more than hatred, she transforms it into resentment, telling him with a certain sarcasm to enjoy «his new baby.»

The Relapse

But let’s be honest, nobody forgets their ex overnight, especially when several years have passed.

Shakira, however much of a wolf she may be, is also human. And like the rest of mortals, she also suffers emotional relapses. Thus, in La Fuerte, the Colombian explains that she has had to delete even his phone number so as not to call him. And it’s that, no matter how hard she tries, she won’t forget him overnight.

«I deleted your number, and for what? If I already know it. I don’t forget you no matter how much I pretend, how much I pretend,» she sings in her new collaboration with Bizarrap.

But that’s not all. Shak also wonders if the other person still remembers her and if they have the same doubts as she does in Tiempo Sin Verte.

Women No Longer Cry (especially after accepting the situation). But like everything in this life, time becomes the protagonist’s best ally, who little by little transforms those doubts into acceptance. There is no more hatred or resentment. Only a new life where she is the protagonist. Although she is aware that life is not full of butterflies, she knows that «everything comes out of everything.»

«Between routine and stress, life is a bitch, I know. But for every withered flower, another one is born again,» she sings, comparing herself to a plant in Cómo, Dónde y Cuándo.

Then she realizes that the most important thing she has taken from these years is what she has in front of her: the love of her two children. The artist envelops them in Acróstico from her new life.

But it doesn’t stop there. To close this chapter of her life, the Colombian dedicates one last song (Última) to that person who was by her side for so many years. However, this time it’s not from hatred or resentment, but from memories. A way to bid farewell to that part of her life:

«We lost love halfway. How did you get tired of something so genuine? What we learned remained,» she sings in the ballad. And so, without further ado, the pop star bid farewell to the athlete. (Read in the voice of Carrie Bradshaw)

Epilogue: A New Beginning

But every good love story has its own epilogue. Did the pop star believe in love again? Did she fall in love again?

Shakira sings about falling in love again in three songs on this new album. Three songs that, in addition, have just been released. In «Puntería,» the Colombian joins Cardi B to talk about that feeling of flirting, of someone liking you again, and the nerves that are felt.

In «Cohete,» alongside Rauw Alejandro, she talks about the desire to see her crush again. But it’s in «Nassau» where the artist speaks openly about falling in love again.

«I had promised that I would never love again. You appeared to heal the wounds left by that,» she sings in «Nassau.»

Without a doubt, Women No Longer Cry is a true emotional journey through Shakira’s recent years. Of course, we recommend that you listen to it in this order, even if it’s just to enjoy the movie we’ve put together.
