In the 20th edition of Premios Juventud, held at the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot in Puerto Rico, Colombian legend Shakira emerged as the top winner, receiving 8 awards in various categories. These included Female Premios Juventud Artist, Best Song For My Ex («TQG»), Girl Power (TQG), Best Urban Track (TQG), Best Pop/Urban Song, Best Pop/Urban Collaboration, Tropical Mix, and Social Dance Challenge. The iconic singer was even recognized for her incredible social work since 1997 with her «Pies Descalzos Foundation,» aimed at helping children and families in situations of social exclusion to receive proper education.
«We live in an ambiguous world, surrounded by good music, beauty, TikTok dances, selfies with filters, but there are realities that cannot be filtered or disguised. There are places where people who are born poor, die poor because they lack opportunities to receive a quality education. Places where it’s hard to believe, people are discriminated against based on their sexual preferences, skin color, or social class. It’s an imperfect world that’s constantly changing, and that’s something we must not waste,» she added to the applause of the audience.
Following the artist from Barranquilla, two of the leading figures in the new generation of Latin artists transforming the genre and taking it to another level, Karol G and Peso Pluma, received 5 awards each, though they were absent from the celebration due to other commitments in their demanding schedules.
The «Doble P» won awards in the categories of Male Premios Juventud Artist, La Nueva Generación Regional Mexicano, Best Regional Mexican Song, Best Regional Mexican Collaboration, and Best Regional Mexican Album. Meanwhile, Karol G shared two awards with Shakira for Girl Power and Best Urban Track, and also received individual awards for My Favorite Streaming Artist, Social Dance Challenge, and the coveted award for Best Female Urban Album for Mañana será bonito.
They were followed by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, Argentine artist Bizarrap, and Spanish artist Rosalía, who each received four awards. One notable absence of the night was rapper 6IX9INE, who was scheduled to perform with Yailin La Más Viral but did not attend the award ceremony due to «security issues» following his heated social media beef with the singer’s ex-partner, Anuel AA.
A Night Filled with Emotions & Throwbacks
There are multiple beautiful words to describe the 2023 Premios Juventud gala, hosted by Mexican Alejandra Espinoza and Ángela Aguilar, Puerto Rican Dayanara Torres, and Brazilian-born telenovela actor Marcus Ornellas. But if we were to sum it up briefly, it was a captivating and touching ceremony that moved the audience and paid tribute to Latin music through memories and iconic songs.
The gala opened on a high note with an iconic reggaeton set produced by the genre’s legend, Daddy Yankee. The performances offered a great genre throwback to the rhythms of Zion & Lennox, Wisin, Angel & Khriz, among others. The boom of Mexican music was also present with Fuerza Regida and their «Sabor Fresa,» and even the regional Mexican collab «Ni me Debes, Ni te Debo» of Camilo and Carín León.
One of the most anticipated moments in the ceremony was the tribute to the late Jenni Rivera, with musical performances by her daughters Chiquis Marin, Jenicka López, and Jacqie Campos, all dressed in white to give voice to the song «Pedacito de mí,» which Jenni Rivera composed when she was pregnant with her son Johnny. Today, that song is part of her posthumous album, Misión Cumplida. Holding white roses, the fans supported them in front of a stage surrounded by family photos of Jenni and the band in which Johnny was playing.
