Emmy Awards 2024 Winners: ‘Succession,’ & ‘The Bear,’ Take the Spotlight

A night that evoked strong feelings of nostalgia and paid heartfelt tributes to legendary TV series

Archivado en: Movies & TV Series  •

The 75th Emmy Awards were initially announced, and they were scheduled to air on FOX on Monday, September 18, 2023. However, the Television Academy and the Fox network reached an agreement to postpone the celebration and broadcast of the awards ceremony due to a strike by writers and actors/actresses that brought Hollywood to a standstill. The awards were rescheduled for January 15, 2024.

The Nominations

The drama series Succession received the most nominations, with a total of 27, and it had three of its actors competing in the Best Actor category: Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong. This marked a historic moment as it had never happened before in the history of the Emmy Awards.

In second place was the HBO series The Last of Us, with 24 nominations. It also made history as the first live-action video game adaptation to receive major Emmy nominations. The White Lotus received 23 nominations, while the ‘Star Wars’ series, including Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Mandalorian, earned a combined total of 22 nominations. Additionally, The Bear, a series known for its unique comedy, accumulated 13 nominations.

Winners

Succession, The Bear, and Bronca stood out as the big winners. Succession clinched the title of best drama series, with its writer, Jesse Armstrong, and director, Mark Mylod, both earning awards for their work on the episode ‘Connor’s Wedding.’

Interestingly, The Bear was named the best comedy, but not for its second season; instead, it was recognized for its first. As we mentioned earlier, these awards experienced a delay. Unfortunately, the show’s creator, Christopher Storer, couldn’t accept the awards for best direction and writing due to his battle with COVID-19. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who won the award for best supporting actor, shared this information. However, Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, who won best actor and best supporting actress, respectively, did take the stage to deliver their acceptance speeches.

Quinta Brunson secured the title of best actress for her role in Colegio Abbott, marking a significant moment as the first Black woman to win this award since 1981.

An Evening of Nostalgia

The strike was only briefly discussed, but there was a strong sense of nostalgia at a series of gatherings featuring beloved TV shows. Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer, Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, and George Wendt reunited at the Cheers bar. In the absence of James Gandolfini, Michael Imperioli met up with Lorraine Bracco in The Sopranos therapist’s office, coinciding with the show’s 25th anniversary.

Carol Burnett, Grey’s Anatomy, Ally McBeal, and American Horror Story were also honored. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took a moment to reminisce about their two-season stint hosting Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.
