The song encapsulates a raw but necessary transformation journey to step into a new chapter of her career

Danna Paola is enjoying a remarkable year in her music career. Following her appearance at the Premios Juventud, her collaboration with Kim Petras, and her debut performance at the Tomorrowland festival alongside acclaimed DJ Steve Aoki. Not to mention her XT4S1S Tour U.S.A., marking her first tour across the United States.

Two weeks ago, she dropped her song «Tenemos Que Hablar» (We Need to Talk), and only yesterday she unveiled the music video. On the release of the song, she expressed that the synth pop song is part of a very challenging, raw, and yet luminous stage of her life.

The song carries significant depth. While we often associate it with themes of romance or relationships, the reality is that this song holds relevance across various matters. In Danna’s context, it might also extend to the music industry, although our certainty on that connection remains tentative.

Song Lyrics

Wanting to feel something, I’m searching for what to do
I can’t answer to things that I don’t even know
I’m finding myself and finally, it feels good

Today my happiness doesn’t depend on anyone
It wasn’t in vain, it wasn’t bad
My excuses have run out
And if it’s a mistake for you, I wish you good luck

We need to talk honestly
I’m not like other people
I know that sometimes people don’t understand the truth
When it’s already more than evident
It was a pleasure to meet you
I’m not like other people
I know that sometimes people don’t understand the truth
When it’s already more than evident

And as much as it hurts, it’s reality
We were living in lies, it was advertising
You can’t deny, something was missing, it was falling apart

And when there’s smoke, there’s fire
It sounds cold, but nothing fills us anymore
This time, by losing, I gain more
It was a good experiment with our feelings

We need to talk honestly
I’m not like other people
I know that sometimes people don’t understand the truth
When it’s already more than evident
It was a pleasure to meet you
I’m not like other people
I know that sometimes people don’t understand the truth
When it’s already more than evident

It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t in vain
My excuses have run out
And if it’s a mistake for you, I wish you good luck

Music Video

The video is directed by Edgar Esteves and stars only Danna Paola. In a nutshell, it captures a transformation journey –starting with a raw, vulnerable version, and then, mixed with laughter and tears, she then evolves into a portrayal of a dark angel, echoing Danna’s hints at stepping into a fresh chapter of her career.

This film is too personal and special for me, and right now, my emotions are at the surface and my heart is racing at 120 beats per minute. Shooting this film took me back to a couple of years ago, looking into the camera from a different perspective, embodying and portraying emotions but from a personal story. It has been a highly cathartic and liberating experience… My heart is overjoyed with the outcome; this time, I’m the one telling the story» expressed the singer on an Instagram post.

Along with that caption, she added «Now I have wings, not chains».

The reality is, both the song’s lyrics and its video are remarkably relatable. We’ve all navigated through tough times that inevitably trigger change. Whether we like it or not, these experiences are seldom beautiful; they’re often marked by pain. Yet, this is the path that often leads us to genuine growth and transformation –a journey towards a more resilient and empowered version of ourselves.

Blonde Danna?

It could be easily overlooked or dismissed as insignificant that there’s a scene of the singer with blonde hair in the video. However, beneath the surface, many of these elements within the video hold significant weight.

As the song’s lyrics and video unfold an evolution, not just personally but artistically, her hair becomes a key symbol of her past self.

Danna Paola went through a phase where she switched her natural hair color for blonde. This change wasn’t merely superficial, although it’s a common choice for both artists and non-artists when facing changes. For Danna, it held deep significance, symbolizing both transformation and a journey of self-discovery, as she explained on the Calle y Poché podcast.

My hair color nowadays is something very personal, very ‘me.’ So, when I went blonde, it felt like a self-betrayal, because my whole life I had said to myself, ‘I will never dye my hair blonde.’ It might sound silly, but it’s one of those things where suddenly you find yourself caught up in all of this, and I was already blonde with a different kind of personality. I was going along with what others wanted from me, and that’s when I thought, ‘What is this?’.”

So, knowing all this, what do you think about the song and music video?
