Artists Who Announced Their Retirement from the Stage in 2023

Some have done it permanently, while others will take a temporary break

As 2023 comes to a close, regrettably for the music world, some of its legends have also announced the conclusion of their careers on stage. Some have been driven by personal reasons, others by religious beliefs, and sadly, a few have made this decision due to health issues. 

Daddy Yankee

Daddy Yankee’s career took off almost 20 years ago in 2004 with his hit reggaetón song «Gasolina.» This music style changed the game for Latin music and became a worldwide sensation that’s still popular today. In March 2022, the Puerto Rican artist announced his retirement from the music industry. During the same year, he released his seventh and final album, Legendaddy.

He then embarked on his farewell music tour, titled ‘La Última Vuelta World Tour,’ which kicked off on July 16, 2022, in Spain and concluded on December 22, 2022, in Miami. According to last year’s year-end Boxscore charts, this tour ranked 13th among the Top 40 Tours of 2022, grossing over $125 million in total revenue. He bid a final farewell to the stage with a series of concerts called ‘La Meta,’ marking the culmination of his farewell tour. 

“This career, that has been a marathon, I finally see the finish line. Now I get to enjoy what you all have given me. They say that I made this genre global but it was you guys that gave me the key to open the doors to make this the biggest genre in the world,” the Puerto Rican artist said in a statement then. “I confess that it’s the biggest treasure I can have in my career. I always worked so I didn’t fail you, so I didn’t get into problems, with much discipline, to inspire the new generation to be leaders. Today, I’m announcing my retirement from music by giving you my best production and my best concert tour.”

Eduin Caz

The lead singer of Grupo Firme, Eduin Caz, announced his temporary retirement from the stage on July 30th through his social media:.

“What a wonder to reach the age of 30 with such a spectacular audience, and in another country, Costa Rica. I’ve told you a lot in my stories that I’m almost leaving, and it’s not a lie. I always had a goal, which has now been achieved, but it made me lose all my emotional stability in my life. I lost many things that won’t come back, and the truth is, I weigh everything I’ve experienced, and honestly, things had to happen this way. But I think I need to start thinking about myself again, to feel good about myself. It’s not the end of Grupo Firme; I’m not going solo. I’m just saying goodbye because from what I see, I only have to fulfill the last three dates I have, and then I’ll reclaim my life. THANK YOU, FAMILY.”

Nicky Jam

In October 2023, Nicky Jam, one of reggaetón’s true legends, announced his retirement from music. He shared the news on his official Instagram account, where the Puerto Rican artist posted a heartfelt video featuring scenes from his series Nicky Jam: El Ganador. In this series, he opens up about his life story, sharing the ups and downs, including struggles with vices, excesses, and personal triumphs. But before saying goodbye to his music career, Nicky Jam wanted to send a special message.

“In the near future, I’ll be stepping away, but this is my legacy –motivation and self-improvement… stay tuned for my farewell global tour and my ultimate album. I love you,” he wrote in the video’s description. So, before Nicky Jam closes the chapter on his musical projects forever, he will tour to present his last album. Currently, it’s unclear which countries he will visit or when we can expect to hear this new album, but we are confident that he will share more details soon.

Anahí (RBD)

Anahí, who is widely recognized for her role as Mia Colucci in the iconic telenovela that brought RBD to fame, has openly expressed that returning to the stage with the band fulfilled a lifelong dream for her. During a performance of one of their most cherished songs, «Sálvame,» the actress and singer knelt on the stage, tears welling up in her eyes as she was deeply moved by the presence of her dedicated fans. However, now at the age of 40, Anahí has also built a beautiful family, which includes her husband and two children. 

     I can say goodbye in such a beautiful way and show my children and someday my grandchildren what I left in people’s hearts. What matters most to me is that love that will remain forever, no matter if we are far or near; we will carry what we are enjoying,” she added.

The 1975

Matty Healy, the frontman of the British band, The 1975, announced during the band’s ‘Still… At Their Very Best’ world tour, that band would be going on an ‘indefinite hiatus’ once they finish up their current tour, which is scheduled to conclude in late March 2024.

As reported by NME, it was during the third date of this extensive tour, held at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Healy addressed the crowd, revealing their plan to take an open-ended break after their two-year-long global journey.

     It’s wonderful you’re all here. After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus with shows, so it’s wonderful to have you guys with us tonight. Thank you so much.” –Healy told the crowd in video captured by fans.
