The renowned American baritone Jubilant Sykes, a prominent figure in opera, gospel, and classical music, died violently on Monday after being stabbed inside his home in Santa Monica. According to local authorities, his eldest son was arrested at the scene as the suspected perpetrator of the attack that ended the 71-year-old artist’s life.
Police responded at approximately 9:20 p.m., after a 911 call reported an assault taking place inside the residence. When officers arrived at the property, they were met by the person who had placed the call, who led them inside. There they found a man with extremely severe injuries, who was later confirmed to be the celebrated singer. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, with no possibility of resuscitation.
Also inside the home was Micah Sykes, 31, the performer’s son. Officers arrested him without incident. He is charged with homicide and, according to the Santa Monica Police Department, the case will be forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine the final charges. The investigation remains open as authorities work to determine what led to the tragedy and whether there were any prior signs of family conflict.

Over a career that took him to internationally renowned stages — including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, London’s Barbican Centre, and the Hollywood Bowl — the singer established himself as one of the most distinctive voices of his generation.
