Repression and Surveillance in Puerto Rico (1960s-1980s)

On March 4, 1970, the Puerto Rican police shot and killed student Antonia Martínez Lagares while she was on a balcony as students and police clashed in the streets of Río Piedras. Her name was immortalized in the song «Antonia, tu nombre es historia» by Antonio Caban Vale, «el topo». Her face can still be seen painted on the walls of the urban area of the university district of Río Piedras.

The students were not the only ones who mobilized. The poor and working-class people also took action, occupying lands and lots to build their modest homes. Communities such as Villa Cañona or Villa Sin Miedo were created as land occupations. One case that captured national attention was that of Adolfina Villanueva.
