One of the music groups that has gained popularity alongside the rise and internationalization of Mexican music is Fuerza Regida. They recently announced their tour across the United States and Mexico, titled ‘Pero No Te Enamores’ (But Don’t Fall in Love), thanks to the success of their hits like «Harley Quinn» with Marshmello, «Sabor Fresa« (Strawberry Flavor), and «TQM» (Te Quiero Mucho – I Love You Very Much), among others.

This tour showcases their latest album, Pa Las Baby’s Y Belikeada, released on October 10, 2023, and their EP Dolido Pero No Arrepentido (Hurt But Not Regretful) released on February 9, 2024. However, just before this EP was released, news broke that on February 3, the lead singer of the group, Jesús Ortiz Paz, was detained at the Customs of Garita Uno in Mexicali, Baja California (Mexico), by National Guard officers when attempting to cross from Calexico, California, to Mexico.

According to reports from El Financiero, after being released, Ortiz had a brief encounter with the media where he stated: “I’m not entirely sure what they’re saying, but I’ll tell you something: I’m hurt and regretful. The album comes out on February 8, so get ready for all those who are hurt and not regretful.”

Why Was Fuerza Regida’s Singer Detained?

Jesús Ortiz Paz and some companions were detained during a routine inspection by the National Guard and Customs personnel. Allegedly, they found two plastic bags containing marijuana, weighing a total of 8.8 grams, during the inspection. Consequently, the authorities handed them over to federal prosecutors to determine their legal status.

According to Aristegui Noticias, the lead singer and his companions were released two days later, as it was determined that they could face their legal process while being free, given that the offense does not warrant mandatory pre-trial detention.

Additionally, the amount of marijuana they were carrying is below the quantities considered for retail sale, and each of the four detainees was found with some or part of the seized marijuana. Finally, Ortiz and his companions admitted to being cannabis consumers, so the Federal Public Ministry determined that the possible offense to prosecute could be simple possession of marijuana.

However, despite being released, an investigation file was opened. Therefore, the involved parties are obligated to appear ‘whenever they are summoned to perform investigative proceedings’ within the referred file. Failure to comply may result in being compelled to appear before the Public Ministry.
