The CONCACAF W Gold Cup 2024 is happening, marking one of the most significant football championships globally, uniting the top women’s national teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Amidst this celebration of women’s soccer prowess on the international stage, LOS40 USA aims to make its contribution. Recognizing the unifying power of both sports and music, we present ‘W Gold Cup: Songs for Gold’.

In this special series, Pame Voguel and Iñaki Álvarez interview our favorite players to uncover their musical preferences. María Sánchez has already shared that she’s currently into ‘corridos tumbados,’ mentioning Natanael Cano (pioneer in the genre). Now, it’s Trinity Rodman’s turn to reveal her playlist. At just 21 years old, her current favorite artists include some modern classics like Justin Bieber and Rihanna, alongside a fondness for rap with A Boogie wit da Hoodie.

The Impact of TikTok on Music

The song that’s always playing in their lockers, as Rodman mentioned, is none other than one that gained popularity mainly through the social media platform TikTok: «Water.» South African singer and songwriter Tyla skyrocketed to international fame with this track, making it onto the charts in seventeen countries. This achievement also marked her as the first South African solo artist in 55 years to break into the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

The impact of the song was so significant that Tyla even won her first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. “I never thought I’d say I won a GRAMMY at 22 years old,” the South African singer said.
