Sebastián Yatra on Why He Left Reggaeton Behind: The Life-Changing Advice from His Father

The song that has impacted him the most is a ballad

In 2018, Sebastián Yatra gained worldwide fame with the song ‘Traicionera’. The track, a mix of reggaeton and pop, quickly became one of the year’s biggest hits. It’s a song that almost everyone in our country knows.

Even though this single brought a lot of success to a 23-year-old Yatra, it’s not the song he’s most proud of from his album MANTRA. His favorite track from that album is actually quite different from his usual urban style. It’s the only pop ballad on the album: ‘Como Mirarte’.

In an interview with Cris Regatero for LOS40 España, Yatra shared how this song came to life and why it means so much to him:

“What really made a difference in my career, which has now lasted about 10 years, was the moment I decided to be myself. I had this song, ‘Como Mirarte’, which I wrote in college about a girl I really liked, and it was a ballad.”

The Advice from His Father That Changed Everything

But it was his father’s advice that pushed him to record the song: “At the time, reggaeton was everywhere, and I was like, ‘parce.’ I told my dad, ‘Dad, they’re trying to get me to sing these other songs, but this is the one I want to release.’ And he said, ‘Sebas, put out what really represents you. Be 100% yourself. Even if only a thousand people or just one person listens, if they truly feel it and you leave something real with them, it’s worth it. That’s better than a million people hearing something you don’t love.’”

Now, seven years later, Yatra looks back on ‘Como Mirarte’ with great affection, saying it’s one of the songs that has impacted him the most. He even says his new sound will continue in that same vein:

“’Como Mirarte’ is one of the ballads that has stayed with me the most. It’s like continuing to believe in those kinds of songs. After a year without releasing music, it feels good to go back to that.”

Could his upcoming new song, ‘Los Domingos,’ be a pop ballad that follows in the footsteps of ‘Como Mirarte’? We’ll have to wait a few more days to find out.
