LGBTQ+ artists hold a crucial place in the community. They provide a strong voice for representation, empowerment, and hope. Through their creative work, they make LGBTQ+ individuals more visible and accepted. They also help break down stereotypes and build understanding.

In Latin and Spanish music, several artists have been real game-changers in this area. This was especially important in the past when it was even less accepted for two people of the same sex to be together like heterosexual couples. Some of these artists, like Ricky Martin and Christian Chávez from RBD, kept their identities secret until they embraced their true selves.

Chávez, through the group’s website, asked his fans not to judge him for being honest and to be proud of who they are. In a letter, he said, “I wasn’t ready to speak out because I was afraid of rejection and criticism, especially from my family and the potential consequences.” He added, “But now it’s time to grow, not just as a person but also as an artist.”

As part of Pride Month and to honor the tough journey the LGBTQ+ community has paved with a lot of effort, we’ve put together a list of recent songs by artists from the community that you might not know. Thanks to these artists and their songs, which most come from their own experiences and stories, people can feel seen and proud of who they are.

«PLATONIK» – Danna

Danna recently released her latest album, Childstar, which is a collection of songs that truly reflect her journey, filled with many ups and downs. In an interview with LOS40 Spain, she talked about hitting rock bottom before finding her way again. That’s when she decided to channel all her experiences into this album, making it her most personal, mature, and experimental work so far.

Among these songs, Danna shares a love story in «PLATONIK.» It’s based on an beautiful experience she had during her years in Spain, where she had a crush on a girl. Through this, she realized an important part of herself.

However, this isn’t the first time the Mexican artist has released songs supporting the community. In «TQ Y YA» (I love you, and that’s it), she expresses that it doesn’t matter who you love, love is love.

«princess peach» – Young Miko

Young Miko is probably one of the most important artists of this generation, not just because of her music but also for her impact on the LGBTQ+ community. Her hit «Lisa,» which openly talks about her attraction for women, shot her to fame. But the Puerto Rican artist has many songs on her recently released debut album att. where she doesn’t hide who she is.

Some of the standout tracks on her album are «curita« and «princess peach.» She also collaborated with Karol G on «CONTIGO,» where Miko plays ‘la Bichota’s‘ girlfriend in the music video.

«Cuero» – Villano Antillano

Villano Antillano has openly identified as transgender, but her journey hasn’t been easy. She began her transition at 25, facing numerous social and personal challenges along the way. “It took me a while because I tried hard to fit into society’s expectations, but it just wasn’t authentic,” she shared in an interview with Vogue.

However, she has gradually overcome many obstacles and shares honest music about her experiences. She has also made her mark as one of the most important artists in the urban genre, and her songs really empower us.

«RIDE OR DIE PT.2» – Sevdaliza, Tokischa, Villano Antillano

We’ve already talked about Villano Antillano, but you might not know Sevdaliza beyond her viral song «RIDE OR DIE,» both the original and part 2 with Tokischa. Sevdaliza deserves an article all to herself, but to sum it up, she’s an artist who fights against discrimination and xenophobia. “In the brain of love, there is no room for racism or intolerance,” she said when she released her song «Bebin.»

Tokischa, on the other hand, is very open about her sexuality, identifying as bisexual. Through her music, she always demonstrates that she isn’t afraid to say what she thinks or feels.

«Bota Niña» – Bad Gyal, Anitta

Anitta is recognized as one of the most genuine figures in the industry. The Brazilian has always been very honest about many aspects of her life. Such as her surgeries, love life, and sexual orientation. “I kissed a girl before kissing a boy,” she said during an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Not So Recent but Iconic

«Dime Como Hago» – María Becerra

One of María Becerra‘s first songs was written when she fell in love with a woman. «Dime Cómo Hago» is a beautiful declaration of the purest kind of love. It’s not just about physical attraction but about seeing beyond the surface. The song even talks about wanting to ‘heal’ the person’s wounds and make sure they are treated as they deserve.

«TUYA» – Rosalía

The Spanish singer sparked questions about who the song was directed at, as the lyrics suggest it’s dedicated to a woman. Later, actress Hunter Schafer, best known for her role in the series Euphoria, revealed that during this time, she had a romantic relationship with Rosalía.
