Mariah Carey is going through one of the hardest times of her life after losing two of the most important women to her on the same day: her mother and her sister. “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the singer shared in a statement to CNN.

Mariah’s mother, Patricia Carey, was 87 years old, and her older sister, Alison Carey, was 63 at the time of her passing. The details surrounding their deaths haven’t been revealed yet. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” added the All I Want for Christmas Is You singer.

Patricia Carey, the eldest of the Carey family, was once an opera singer who studied at Juilliard. Later, she worked as a vocal coach, which might explain part of her daughter’s remarkable talent. With her unexpected passing, the 55-year-old singer is now left without both parents, as her father, Alfred Roy, passed away in 2002.

Mariah Carey’s relationship with her mother wasn’t always close. It had its ups and downs, as she revealed in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey (2020), where she shared: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.”

Even so, the pop star shared some heartfelt words in that same book: “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
