The CHC Proposes Honoring Alejandro Fernández for Promoting Latin Culture in the USA

Alejandro Fernández, also known as ‘El Potrillo’ due to his powerful voice and stage presence, is considered one of the most influential and respected artists in the Latin music industry, particularly in Mexican music. Additionally, he is the son of the legendary Vicente Fernández, widely acclaimed as the main interpreter of ‘Música Ranchera’.

Alejandro is recognized for his contributions to ranchera and mariachi music, but his career has spanned a wide range of musical styles, including pop and Latin pop. For this reason, on September 20, 2023, Representative Nanette Barragán, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), introduced a House Resolution to recognize and honor his legacy and impact on Latino music. 

     Alejandro not only creates music that millions of people enjoy across the globe, but he’s using his platform and robust following toempower the Latino community through his artistic talents. He’s also been a strong advocateof our continued work to establish the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino on the National Mall. The CHC applauds Alejandro for his lifetime commitment to uplift Latino culture through music, and I look forward to his continued support of our efforts to serve Latinos across the country.”

What Does the Resolution Acknowledge? 

It recognizes Alejandro Fernández’s illustrious career spanning more than four decades and his important contributions to Mexican music and Latin culture. Additionally, he praises Fernández for his humanitarian efforts and the lasting global impact he has had, which extends far beyond his musical achievements. As an international artist, Fernández has played an essential role in uplifting and uniting the Latino community by generously dedicating his time, resources and art.

In response, Fernández expressed: “I believe music is a tie that binds us together. We gather to celebrate life, love, and the rich Latino culture that unites us wherever we are in the world. I’m honored that my shows are also vehicle for giving back and supporting causes that directly impact our community. I extend my deepest gratitude to Representative Barragán and the members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for this incredible recognition.” 

Philanthropic Commitment

In 2021, Fernández donated $100,000 from the proceeds of his ‘Hecho En México’ tour to Families Belong Together, a non-profit organization actively working to end family separation and detention at the U.S.-Mexico border.

In 2023, he pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds from his ongoing ‘Amor y Patria’ US tour to the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino (FRIENDS), a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino. Additionally, he expressed his intention to assign a portion of the proceeds from his upcoming concert in the New York City area to support the New York Immigration Coalition.

In October, FRIENDS, in collaboration with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, is set to host a special event on Capitol Hill to recognize Fernández and celebrate his career and contributions.
