Taylor Swift took to her social media to introduce her seventh album to the world: «This album is very much a celebration of love, in all its complexity, coziness, and chaos. It’s the first album of mine that I’ve ever owned, and I couldn’t be more proud,» she wrote.
The last summer before the pandemic, all eyes were on the work of the Tennessee native: after releasing four singles in the previous months and weeks («ME!,» «You Need To Calm Down,» «The Archer,» and «Lover»), Taylor Swift capped off August with the presentation of an album that served as her response to a previous album, Red (2012).
This album is very much a celebration of love, in all its complexity, coziness, and chaos. It’s the first album of mine that I’ve ever owned, and I couldn’t be more proud. I’m so excited that #Lover is out NOW: https://t.co/t7jK7XmEqa pic.twitter.com/NMgE7LTdGZ

In the prologue that can be read in the booklet of the original version of Red, the solo artist bids farewell to her fans with the following words:
No sooner said than done. Her now-finished relationship with actor Joe Alwyn, combined with the maturity and personal growth that comes with the years, were responsible for the album that unfolded before our eyes, one of the most romantic in the singer’s entire career, addressing love from different perspectives: romantic love, family love, love for friends, but also the search for self-love.
Four years later, we can say that Lover (2019) has become her most successful album in the streaming era. Its pure sales don’t surpass the over 20 million records that 1989 has sold worldwide over the last nine years, but it’s the first album in her discography to exceed 7 billion streams on Spotify (and the sixth in the platform’s history for a female artist).
The arrival of The Eras Tour in the United States has boosted the artist’s daily streams over the past six months to numbers we hadn’t seen until now: consistently maintaining an average of 70 million daily streams, Taylor Swift can proudly represent a living music history. Additionally, the official designation of «Cruel Summer» as a single (something the singer announced live during one of her concerts), along with the massive streaming of the song, has given a second life to this track, which is now the most played on the album (nearly 950 million streams) and the first song of her entire career to surpass 4 million daily streams for 52 days. Something unheard of for a song that entered our lives four years ago.
«Lover» with 927 million streams, «You Need To Calm Down» with 776, «ME!» with 765, and «The Man» with 547 round out the Top 5 most-streamed songs from the album. All of them are singles. But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing; the pandemic and Covid-19-induced lockdowns forced the singer to cancel her international tour, keeping her off the stage for nearly five years.
Today, however, we can celebrate in grand style the fourth birthday of this special album. Congratulations!
