Shakira Becomes Billboard’s First-Ever ‘Latin Woman of the Year’

The Colombian diva will be honored at Billboard’s ceremony on May 7

Shakira a.k.a the Queen of Latin Music deserves all the awards she can get! And precisely, next week she will be honored as ‘Women of the Year’ at the first-ever ‘Mujeres Latinas en la Música’ Billboard event. The gala will be hosted by icons Ivy Queen and Jaqueline Bracamontes, and shot in the Watsco Center in Miami next May 6, airing exclusively on May 7 at 9 p.m ET / 8. p.m. CT.

The aim of this new Billboard event is celebrating Latin women in the music industry, including female artists, creatives and executives changing the game. Latin stars like Emilia, Evaluna, Ana Gabriel, Goyo and Thalia will also receive special awards at the gala.

“Shakira is the ultimate Woman in Music. Thanks to her, Latin women all over the world have been empowered to write and perform deeply personal music. She created a movement all on her own, and continues to be more relevant than ever today, with grace, a deep tradition of giving back, and enormous talent. She is the definition of a Woman in Music,” said Leila Cobo, Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin/Español.

Shakira has already publicly thanked Billboard’s homage on her social media, confirming her attending next week’s ceremony in Miami, where she lives now with her family.

Shakira’s: An Icon that Keeps Shaking the Scene

There isn’t any doubt that Shakira is one of the biggest artists of all time and even one of our epic Latin urban queens. Her versatility and uplifting style has made her to perdure at the top of the charts across her 30 year long career.

Her music has always stood out because of her ability to transmit strong feelings: from desperately falling in love to the worst kind of anger after a heartbreak. Hits like ‘La Tortura’, ‘Hips don’t Lie’ or ‘Loba’ have become a vital part of the Latin urban music legacy.

This year she has experienced an astonishing evolution in the urban scene. After divorcing Spanish football player Gerard Piqué, she literally broke the Internet several times, showing once more who rules the scene. ‘Te Felicito’ and ‘Monotonía’ made a great impact worldwide, but definitely the #53 Session with Argentine producer Bizarrap marked a before and after in the scene. This awesome collab is surely one of the best diss songs of all times and has already reached 4 Guinness World Records, remaining the most streamed Latin song on YouTube (63 million) and Spotify (14,3 million).

“Orgullosa de ser Latinoamericana”

«My ex is Latin American. You can’t imagine what I have received through social media from her fans”, stated Shakira’s ex-husband in a recent Twitch interview with the Catalan streamer Gerard Romero. In response to these polemic comments, the Colombian diva delivered a powerful response: “Orgullosa de ser latinoamericana” (“Proud to be a Latin American woman”), she wrote on her social media. An iconic answer that also became the title of an official Spotify playlist announced by Shakira.
