Olivia Rodrigo is officially back! After a few days in which the singer was giving us various clues about her next album ‘GUTS’ and her next single, ‘vampire’ has finally arrived, a ballad in which Rodrigo narrates in an acid and raw way a toxic relationship as only she knows how to do it. This song marks her first drop since her debut work studio ‘SOUR’ in 2021.

Directed by Petra Collins, who previously worked on the ‘Good 4 U’ visual, the music video showcases Rodrigo in a spooky setting that turns out to be the scene of an awards ceremony. The name of ‘vampire’ makes perfect sense when the artist sings the following verses: «Bloodsucker, fame fucker, bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire,» (although we must say that, in the clean version, «fame fucker» is replaced with «dream crusher,» and «goddamn» is modified to «damn.»).

Collaborating with Daniel Nigro, who also contributed to her debut album, Rodrigo explained in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that the song allowed her to express feelings of rage and rebellion that she doesn’t typically get to display in her everyday life. “I’ve just always been really obsessed with songs that are very dynamic,” she declared. “My favorite songs are high and low, and reel you in and spit you back out. And so we wanted to do a song where it just crescendoed the entire time and it reflects the pent-up anger that you have for a situation.”

And you may ask: what’s the inspiration behind ‘vampire’? According to several media outlets, Rodrigo pours her heart out on this single, talking about a failed relationship with an older ex. The song was written in December 2022 by Olivia herself and later completed in January 2023 alonside Nigro. So, maybe we can think of it as another one of the great breakup songs released this year.

‘vampire’ Lyrics

Here all the lyrics for Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘vampire’

(Verse 1)
Hate to give the satisfaction asking how you’re doing now
How’s the castle built off people you pretend to care about?
Just what you wanted
Look at you, cool guy, you got it
I see the parties and the diamonds sometimes when I close my eyes
Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise
I loved you truly
You gotta laugh at the stupidity

(Chorus)
‘Cause I’ve made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should’ve known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naïve
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire

(Verse 2)
And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news
You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called them crazy too
You’re so convincing
How do you lie without flinching? (How do you lie? How do you lie? How do you lie?)
Oh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked up little thrill
Can’t figure out just how you do it and God knows I never will
Went for me and not her
‘Cause girls your age know better

(Chorus)
I’ve made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should’ve known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naïve
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire

(Bridge)
(Ah)
You said it was true love, but wouldn’t that be hard?
You can’t love anyone ‘cause that could mean you had a heart
I tried to help you out, now I know that I can’t
‘Cause how you think’s the kind of thing I’ll never understand

(Chorus)
I’ve made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should’ve known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naïve
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, famefucker
Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire
