Living in Barbie World could seem mostly perfect. Unless you have a total existential crisis.
Over the decades, millions and millions of us girls have dreamed of belonging to that ideal pink world, where all the perfect canons melted in a friendly, bubblegum-scented atmosphere and where all the Ken’s would treat us like queens. But the reality is quite different for all of us. And it is precisely Billie Eilish‘s new song, «What I Was Made For?», that brings us back to real life and gives us a little more of the true meaning of the film.
Dressed in a vibrant yellow outfit and sporting a 1960s-inspired hairstyle complete with bangs and a ponytail, Billie transforms into a melancholic Barbie. Her deep and delicate voice intertwines with the piano notes and a one-shot scene where we see her pulling out different outfits that deviate from Barbie’s typical color palette.
Billie appears absorbed in her task until everything starts falling apart due to a gust of wind and bursts of rain, showcasing how all her work is ruined. The protagonist becomes increasingly nervous and desperate, giving meaning to the lyrics of the song.
In this sense, it’s clear that «What Was I Made For?» is an existential metaphor that questions the purpose when things stop working like you always assumed it would. The feeling of «if this isn’t going well, what was I made for?» Moreover, the song’s verses offer some clues about the story we will soon witness on the big screen:
All the enjoyment
I’m sad again,
don’t tell my boyfriend
It’s not what he’s made for
What was I made for?Billie Eilish in 'What I Was Made For?'
Moreover, the superstar recently confessed she wrote almost the entirety of the single in one night after being “deeply moved” by some unfinished scenes from the film.
Barbie’s soundtrack is giving us all kinds of songs. We have already danced and listened to with Dua Lipa’s «Dance The Night», Karol G’s «Watati» with Aldo Ranks, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s ‘Barbie World’ featuring Aqua, PinkPantheress ‘Angel’, Charli XCX’s ‘Speed Drive’ and FIFTY FIFTY’s ‘Barbie Dreams’ feat Kali.
Now we are getting nostalgic with Billie’s piano ballad, but there’s much more to come in this iconic album leaded by superproducer Mark Ronson. The highly anticipated studio work includes upcoming hits of Lizzo, Sam Smith, Tame Impala, The Kid LAROI, Khalid, Ava Max and more.
