This Wednesday, July 9, Karol G surprised her more than 70 million followers by sharing a post featuring Squidward—the grumpiest character from SpongeBob SquarePants. The Colombian artist said she felt connected to him. In the animated scene she shared, poor Squidward is frustrated because he can’t do what truly makes him happy: music. A storyline that moved the Tropicoqueta singer and inspired her fans to follow their dreams.
These Squidward stories were posted the same day the trailer for the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants movie dropped: SpongeBob: Team to the Rescue, set to hit theaters in December 2025.

A coincidence that might not be so coincidental. There’s precedent for a Colombian artist creating a hit song for SpongeBob—J Balvin’s Agua, produced with Tainy, became one of the biggest songs of the year, with over a billion views on YouTube. That’s no small feat.
So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Paramount and Nickelodeon tapped the current Latin superstar for this new installment. With Karol G, anything is possible.
We’ll have to wait and see if this theory pans out—but we’d love to see the Tropicoqueta vibe make it to Bikini Bottom.
There are moments in an artist’s career that stand out not because of awards or sold-out shows, but because they’re unexpected, fun, and—let’s be real—a little random. Karol G gave us one of those moments in 2016, when she hit the red carpet at the Kid’s Choice Awards with total attitude and an under the sea vibe.
With her blue hair (yep, that era), a multicolored backward cap, and a matching jacket, La Bichota stepped in front of the cameras and, out of nowhere, busted out her own take on the SpongeBob theme song—raw and unfiltered. “Aye aye, captain, we’re ready! I can’t hear you! AYE AYE, CAPTAIN, WE’RE READY!”

And when the reporter hit her with the iconic question we’ve all sung at some point— “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?”— Karol instantly shouted: “SpongeBob, SpongeBob, yeah!” It was a battle cry, an unexpected tribute, and yet another example of Karol’s sense of humor (and complete fearlessness when it comes to being random). Over the years, she’s proven she can go from heavy reggaetón to playful kid energy in a heartbeat—and still reign supreme.
Best of all? That viral moment still makes the rounds online, and every time it pops up, it brings a smile. Because deep down, we’ve all got a little Bikini Bottom spirit in our hearts.
