Karla Sofía Gascón’s story is heading toward a much brighter outcome than expected just weeks ago. After facing backlash over old tweets that resurfaced, she saw a wave of cancellations—including the publication of her book in Spain—and initially announced that she would not be attending the Oscars as a nominee for Emilia Pérez. However, that decision has now changed.
Gascón had already skipped the 2025 Goya Awards in Spain due to the controversy. Regarding the Los Angeles-based Academy Awards, there was another challenge: Netflix, which distributes Emilia Pérez in the U.S., initially declined to cover her travel expenses.
That didn’t mean Gascón couldn’t attend, but now reports confirm that not only will she be present at the 2025 Oscars, but Netflix has also agreed to fund her trip, just as they have for her co-stars.

It remains unclear whether Gascón will give statements on the red carpet, especially given her previous decision to remain silent on the controversy following a CNN interview in early February.
It’s also unknown whether she will be seated with her co-stars, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, both of whom have been indirectly caught up in the situation. Saldaña has avoided mentioning Gascón in recent award acceptance speeches, while Gomez had to address the controversy publicly, as her name was mentioned in the resurfaced tweets.
Gascón’s presence at the Oscars contradicts her last social media statement, where she said: «For the film, for Jacques (Audiard), for the cast, for the incredible team that deserves this, and for the wonderful journey we have all had together, I have decided to let the work speak for itself. I hope that my silence allows the film to be appreciated for what it is—a beautiful ode to love and difference. I sincerely apologize to anyone who has been offended,» she wrote on Instagram on February 7.
On March 2, she will close this chapter by attending a historic ceremony—not only for Emilia Pérez but also for herself. She is the first transgender actress to be nominated for Best Actress, marking a milestone in Oscar history.
Isabella Rossellini, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Conclave, has openly supported Gascón, revealing that she voted for her:
«I’m a member of the Academy, and when it came time for nominations, I voted for her. What she did is extraordinary… She plays both a terrifying man and a tender woman. She embodies the extremes of male and female stereotypes,» she told La Republica.
«I have never seen a performance like this before. She was nominated for an Oscar, and rightly so. As for the controversy… I read about it but never looked into the details—I’m not interested. I was asked to judge her as an actress,» Rossellini added.
Despite the setbacks in her Oscar campaign, some Academy members, like Rossellini, have voiced their support for her nomination. Many industry professionals have praised her work in Emilia Pérez, meaning she could still have a chance to take home the award.
However, the awards season so far suggests the race is between Demi Moore and Mikey Madison.
Moore has won over audiences with her performance in The Substance and her narrative of reinventing herself as a «popcorn actress,» making her a sentimental favorite for an Oscar career revival.
Meanwhile, Madison is part of Anora, the biggest surprise of the season. Sean Baker’s film has skillfully navigated award season, dodging controversies and collecting wins, making her a strong contender for Best Actress.
Whatever happens, all will be revealed on March 2 at the 97th Academy Awards—one of the most unpredictable editions in Oscar history.
Emilia Pérez is currently playing in theaters.
