Why Did the Duolingo Owl Die?

On February 11, 2025, Duolingo announced the "death" of its iconic owl mascot

On February 11, 2025, Duolingo announced the «death» of its iconic owl mascot, Duo, through a series of humorous and satirical posts on social media. The company stated that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, had passed away, humorously suggesting that he «probably died waiting for users to complete their lessons.»

This announcement is part of Duolingo’s characteristic playful marketing strategy. The company acknowledged Duo’s «many enemies» and requested users to refrain from sharing negative comments about him. They also humorously invited users to provide their credit card information to subscribe to Duolingo Max in his memory.

«We’re aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain form sharing why you hate him in the comments,» the firm stated via Instagram.

The statement also includes a joke about Dua Lipa: «We appreciate that you respect Dua Lipa’s privacy at this time,» referencing the fact that the singer frequently uses the app to learn languages like Spanish and French.

The firm updated its profile pic on X with an image of the owl with crosses over its eyes and its tongue hanging out. Its initial post was topped with what appears to be a new logo in the shape of a cowboy hat.

The «death» of Duo has generated significant buzz online, with various brands and users reacting to the news. Duolingo has hinted at revealing more details about Duo’s demise, suggesting connections to recent events, such as a Kendrick Lamar performance.

This move aligns with Duolingo’s history of engaging and unconventional marketing tactics, aiming to capture user attention and promote the app in a memorable way.

Is Elon Musk Buying Duolingo?

Much like Twitter’s iconic blue bird, which was retired in 2023 after Elon Musk rebranded the platform as X, the Duolingo owl seems to have met its end as part of a corporate makeover.

These rumors about a possible acquisition or merger of the app have intensified after Duolingo shared a video of the iconic owl being run over by a Tesla Cybertruck, a well-known vehicle owned by Elon Musk’s company. Without a doubt, Musk is known for venturing into digital businesses like this.

«UPDATE: Reward for whoever can identify the driver. Please post any leads on TikTok. Thank you for your patience with us during these trying times. #RIPduo,» Duolingo posted.
