What’s the Feud Between Billie Joe of Green Day and Oasis?

The American band's frontman kicked out a fan who tried to play 'Wonderwall' at their concert

On June 30, 2025, during a Green Day concert at Luxexpo in Luxembourg, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong invited a fan onstage to play the guitar part for the show’s grand finale, their classic “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”

However, the fan surprised everyone by strumming the opening chords to Oasis’s iconic “Wonderwall” instead, while Billie Joe began singing the familiar lyrics of Green Day’s hit.

According to fan videos widely shared on TikTok, Armstrong was visibly shocked and said to the fan:

“You told me you could play this one,” referring to the Green Day song, before exclaiming, “Oh, f—!” as the fan continued playing “Wonderwall.” Quickly reclaiming the guitar, Billie Joe told the fan, “Nice try,” before performing the finale himself.

@ro_cocoa The Wonderwall of it all 🥴 Please don’t send him hate guys, it’s just silly, he’s a kid @Green Day @Green Day Inc. @Green Day Italy #greenday ♬ original sound – Queen Antifa 🔻

The unexpected switch and Armstrong’s reaction quickly went viral, sparking jokes and debates online.

Liam Gallagher’s Reaction: Not So Friendly

Liam Gallagher didn’t miss the chance to use one of his usual battlegrounds, the platform X (formerly Twitter). Taking advantage of the viral moment when Billie Joe of Green Day kicked the fan offstage for playing one of the British duo’s biggest hits, Gallagher joined the joke by writing “best song of the night,” as an ironic jab at the American band’s setlist.

In fact, the tension between Green Day and Oasis is nothing new and has a history going back nearly two decades. In 2004, the popular mashup “Boulevard of Broken Songs” combined Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” with Oasis’s “Wonderwall,” underscoring the striking similarities in their music.

In 2006, Noel Gallagher publicly accused Green Day of stealing the arrangement of “Wonderwall” for their song “Holiday.” He stated famously: “If you listen, you’ll find it is exactly the same arrangement as ‘Wonderwall.’ They should have the decency to wait until I am dead before stealing my songs.” Since then, the bands have kept their distance.

More on “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”

In 2024, Armstrong shared with PEOPLE magazine the emotional story behind “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” a song from Green Day’s 1997 album Nimrod. He recalled:

“I had my first real girlfriend, and she went to Cal [University of California, Berkeley]. Me and Tré and a bunch of other guys lived at this house on Ashby Avenue, and she and her roommates lived above us.”

He added: “I remember going to this party one night and listening to these college kids play these acoustic songs, and I was like, ‘Oh wow, that’s pretty cool.’ She was moving to Ecuador, and I was pretty heartbroken about it, so I wrote that song for her.”

Armstrong reflected on the song’s lasting legacy: “It’s a simple love song on a guitar, and it has ended up being played at graduations and bar mitzvahs; it’s at funerals and weddings. It’s wild what it turned into.”
