Billy Ray Cyrus is going through a rough patch. Most of his children are no longer speaking to him, and last summer, he separated from Firerose, whom he married just seven months after their engagement. Their breakup was bitter and controversial.
The country star also recently faced public criticism following his performance at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration earlier this week. During the Liberty Ball event in Washington, Billy Ray experienced technical difficulties during one of his songs. Frustrated, he asked the audience, “Is my guitar still on? I think they cut it. I can’t hear it. Can you? Is anyone still awake out there?” He continued, “Do you want me to keep singing, or should I just get off the stage? I don’t care.” His attitude did not go unnoticed, including by his son, Trace, who broke his silence after more than a year with a public letter expressing his concern and offering his support.’
The Day You Adopted Me Was the Happiest of My Life’
Trace Cyrus, the son of Tish from a previous relationship, was adopted by Billy Ray early in their marriage. In his letter, shared on Instagram, Trace recalled how much that moment meant to him:
«From my earliest memories, all I can recall is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person in the world. I wanted to be just like you. The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life,» he began.
Now, things are different, and Trace hopes the letter will encourage Billy Ray to reflect and make changes: «Sadly, the man I desperately wanted to be like, I barely recognize anymore. It seems like this world has defeated you, and it’s obvious to everyone except you,» Trace wrote, adding that he knew making his feelings public might upset his father but felt compelled by worry.
«The girls and I have been genuinely concerned about you for years, but you’ve pushed us all away. Noah has desperately wanted you to be part of her life, and you haven’t been there for her. She’s your little girl. She deserves better,» he admonished, while also pointing out that Noah still idolizes him.
Trace expressed hope that his father could return to being the man he once was. He noted that even Miley, who shared the screen with Billy Ray during their Hannah Montana years and had a close bond during her younger years, has now cut ties with him. “We’re all clinging to memories of the man we once knew, hoping for the day he comes back. You’re not healthy, Dad, and everyone’s noticing,” he warned.
An Offer of Help
Trace concluded his letter with a heartfelt confession and an offer of support, along with his fear that the world might lose Billy Ray too soon:
«As I write this with tears in my eyes, I hope you realize that this message comes only from a place of love and fear that the world will lose you too soon. I love you, Dad. We haven’t talked in a while, but I’ve been clean and sober for over a year and a half now. Guess what? I feel incredible. I don’t know exactly what you’re struggling with, but I have a pretty good idea. I’d love to help you if you’d open up and accept the help. You know how to reach me. Until that day, I’ll keep praying for you.»
A Divided Family
The Cyrus family fractured following the divorce of Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus. Initially, Noah and Braison supported their father, while Miley, Tish, Brandi, and Trace sided with their mother, even attending her wedding to actor Dominic Purcell.
Despite the strained relationships, some family members remain hopeful that reconciliation is possible among all the Cyruses.
