On September 13, Jordan Terrell Carter—better known as Playboi Carti—celebrated his 29th birthday by dropping All Red, a preview of his highly anticipated third album, I Am Music, set for release this Friday, March 14. After years of teasers since 2020, it looks like the album is finally about to be revealed just before the rapper is performing at the 2025 Rolling Loud California next weekend.
The release is officially listed on Interscope Records’ website, confirming its March 14 debut. I Am Music will feature 25 tracks and follows Carti’s latest collaboration with The Weeknd on Timeless.
Getting to this point has been a long journey, as the rapper has been dropping hints about the project for nearly five years. Naturally, fans erupted on social media upon hearing the official announcement.
‘I AM MUSIC’ Timeline
- This will be the third album from the Atlanta rapper, who has played a major role in shaping trap music and the rage rap subgenre of his generation. Given the years of speculation, here’s a breakdown of the album’s timeline:
- I Am Music is the follow-up to Whole Lotta Red (2020). Shortly after that album’s release, Carti began teasing new material.
Initially, the album was titled Narcissist and was set to drop on September 13, 2021. However, it never came out, and the project continued evolving.
- In 2022, Carti announced a title change to Music. He experimented with producers like F1lthy and the Working on Dying collective.
A significant portion of I Am Music was recorded in a cave-like studio in Paris, where Carti spent three months fully immersed in the creative process.
- In 2023, he revealed that Kanye West was involved in the album’s production. He also confirmed that there would be no features, saying, “I’m trying to do this by myself.”
- On December 7, 2023, Carti posted an Instagram Story saying I Am Music, alongside another post where Pharrell Williams said, “Prepare.” That same day, DJ Akademiks claimed the album was expected to drop in January 2024, calling it “the best thing you’ve ever heard.” However, the release never happened.
- On December 8, 2023, Carti shared the Different Day video via Opium’s Instagram, though the song never made it to streaming platforms.
- Several more videos followed, including 2024, H00dByAir, Backr00ms (with Travis Scott), EvilJ0rdan, and Ketamine.
- On September 13, 2024 (his birthday), he released All Red.
- On November 22, 2024, he dropped Play This, once again through Opium’s Instagram.
- By December 15, 2024, five of the album’s songs had been performed live at Rolling Loud at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
- In February 2025, billboards across Los Angeles began displaying cryptic messages in the album’s signature typography, reading: “MUSIC IS COMING,” “I AM MUSIC MF,” “TRIM,” “IMSOYVL,” “SORRY 4 DA WAIT,” “BABYBOI,” and “OVERLY TRIM.”
Now, after years of anticipation and speculation, I Am Music is finally set to arrive on March 14, 2025.
