2024 was a year of triumphs for Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, and 2025 seemed to be following the same path.
With nominations for some of the most prestigious awards of the season—including the Oscars for her co-starring role in Emilia Pérez—Gascón had cemented a successful global career with a promising future in Hollywood. However, all of that has now been overshadowed by the recent revelation of dozens of tweets from the actress containing racist, Islamophobic, misogynistic, and xenophobic content.
It was writer and screenwriter Sara Hagi who first exposed the collection of posts on Elon Musk’s platform, sparking widespread disappointment among fans of the film and the public at large.
«It’s so insane that karla sofía gascón still has these tweets up. straight up have never seen tweets this racist from someone actively campaigning to win an ACADEMY AWARD. there are more than a dozen…,» Hagi noted on January 30.

Despite the numerous offensive remarks aimed at marginalized communities, Gascón also allegedly targeted specific individuals, including her Emilia Pérez co-star, Selena Gomez.
During the promotion of Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón repeatedly expressed admiration and affection for her co-star, Selena Gomez, who she reportedly grew close to after filming. «I think I’ve done the best work of my career, and I think Selena has too,» Gascón said in interviews.
However, it seems that years before filming the acclaimed movie, Karla may not have held the same opinion of the singer. Several accounts have shared screenshots of a tweet that Gascón allegedly posted on her now-deactivated X account. The tweet referenced the controversial relationship between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

«She’s a poor rich rat pretending to be a miserable victim,» Gascón allegedly wrote about Selena. «She will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife,» the post concluded.
These are particularly harsh words about Gomez, who has spoken openly about the pain of her past relationships.
Gascón has since apologized for «causing pain» with the content of her tweets, while Gomez has remained silent on the matter. Both actresses continue to follow each other on social media.
