On Friday, August 29, Sabrina Carpenter released her highly anticipated seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend. Alongside the drop, she chose ‘Tears’ as the lead single.
This song not only nods to films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Jeepers Creepers, and Striptease in its music video, but also plays with the idea of a different kind of “crying.” It’s another clever wordplay moment that Sabrina has mastered and that fans can’t get enough of.
The album features a total of 13 tracks (including ‘Such a Funny Way’ as a bonus) and moves through sticky-sweet pop with layers of synths and flashes of disco. Created by Sabrina in collaboration with Amy Allen, Jack Antonoff, and John Ryan (who also co-produced), the project explores themes similar to her previous record Short N’ Sweet: heartbreak, fleeting encounters, and relationships without labels.

Let’s start with the name of the project: Man’s Best Friend. It’s no coincidence that the ‘Manchild’ singer teased the tracklist surrounded by dogs—or that she herself plays the role of one (ironically) on the album’s main cover.
However, once you dive into the record, it’s clear Sabrina’s message is that she’s a wild animal that can’t be tamed. She’s not here to cater to a partner—or whatever situationship she’s in. Instead, she’s the one making the choices, setting the pace, and writing the rules. She’s at the center of the story the whole time.

After going through so many bad experiences in love, she’s flipped the script—mirroring the toxic, manipulative behaviors she’s endured from men. On ‘Tears,’ she finds it “turning her on” when her partner shows emotional intelligence and accountability.
But on ‘Don’t Worry I’ll Make You Worry,’ she flips into full revenge mode, promising intermittent reinforcement, ghosting, the silent treatment, and more. Because at the end of the day, what goes around comes around.
