28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle, is one of the most iconic zombie movies ever made. It first hit theaters in 2002, and now the director has confirmed that a new chapter is on the way. The upcoming film will be called 28 Years Later. As the name suggests, it will pick up the story nearly three decades after the outbreak.

In this new installment—expected to be released sometime this 2025—we’ll follow the lives of the last uninfected humans, who now live isolated on an island far from the mainland. Their survival depends on defending that place with everything they’ve got. Boyle is once again behind the camera, with a script by Alex Garland, and the cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes.

After the announcement, Cillian Murphy’s name started to generate a lot of buzz. The Irish actor, best known for his roles in Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders, played the lead in the original 28 Days Later. A role that became legendary. When the first trailer images came out, fans quickly pointed out a familiar-looking face that many believed to be Murphy.

The possibility of his return created a wave of excitement—though it was later confirmed that the character in the trailer wasn’t actually him.

Will Cillian Murphy Be Part of the New 28 Years Later saga?

The answer is yes. After months of speculation about whether it was really Murphy in the teaser images—and whether he would be involved in the new film—director Danny Boyle has finally cleared things up.

In an interview with Total Film, Boyle confirmed that the Irish actor will indeed appear in the next zombie installment. However, he also asked fans to be patient: “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance”. So now we know he’ll be in it, but exactly when and how remains a mystery.

Even though this new film draws inspiration from 28 Days Later, Boyle explained during CinemaCon that The Temple of Bones has a very different script: “While it’s very much informed by 28 Days Later, the script for The Bone Temple is very different. I was able to let my freak flag fly,” he said to the audience.
