What are Ovarian Cysts and Why Do They Occur?

Ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are three conditions that affect women / people with ovaries, but each has distinct characteristics. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the ovaries, typically during ovulation when an ovary releases an egg. Most cysts are benign and do not require treatment, as they tend to resolve on their own. However, some can cause pain or complications, such as torsion or rupture. Their cause can be part of a normal menstrual cycle or a hormonal imbalance, but they are not always linked to an underlying condition.

On the other hand, endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, in places such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic cavity. This abnormal tissue growth causes inflammation, chronic pain, irregular bleeding, and, in some cases, fertility problems. While the exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood, hormonal and genetic factors are believed to play a role in its development. It is a disorder that can cause intense pain and severely affect the quality of life of those who suffer from it. It is estimated to affect around 190 million women worldwide.

On the other hand, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is another common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age, characterized by a hormonal imbalance that results in an excess of male hormones (androgens). This can cause ovaries with multiple small cysts, irregular periods, acne, excessive body hair (hirsutism), and difficulty getting pregnant. Although the name of the disorder may suggest that it only affects the ovaries, PCOS is actually a hormonal disorder that impacts several systems of the body, not just the ovaries. It is estimated that between 6% and 13% of women of childbearing age are affected by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

The best and only way to properly identify ovarian cysts or any other sexual health issue is to consult a professional expert in the field of gynecology.
