The Dominican Republic is in mourning following the collapse of the roof at Jet Set nightclub in the capital city, Santo Domingo, during the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2025. According to authorities, the tragic incident has claimed the lives of at least 113 people and left more than 150 injured.
As reported by CNN Latin America, 146 people have been rescued alive from the rubble, according to Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE). He also noted that at the time of the collapse, there were around 300 people inside the venue. The incident happened around 1:00 a.m. local time, during a live performance by well-known merengue artist Rubby Pérez, who finally died at 69.
The COE stated that the roof gave way without warning, causing panic among those in attendance. President Luis Abinader expressed his condolences and assured that all emergency services are working to provide the necessary support. “Our prayers are with the families affected,” he said.

Emergency response teams—including 911 units, the fire department, members of Dicrim, Civil Defense, as well as medical and rescue crews—have all been involved in the operation.
Rescue workers have been working non-stop to locate and save those trapped beneath the rubble. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse. The community has come together to support the victims and their families during this difficult time.

According to CNN, Dominican President Luis Abinader confirmed that one of the victims was Nelsy Cruz, governor of the Monte Cristi province. In addition, ESPN reported that Octavio Dotel also passed away that same day. He was a former Major League Baseball pitcher and player in the Dominican Republic’s professional baseball league (LIDOM).
