The MTV VMAs 2024 have found their star for this year’s celebration: Katy Perry. The organizers have confirmed that the California-born singer will be the main headliner for the awards ceremony; initially scheduled for the night of September 10. However, due to timing—whether by coincidence or fate—the U.S. election will have a debate between the Republican and Democratic candidates, Trump vs. Harris, on that same evening.
Because of this, the 2024 MTV VMAs, marking their 40th edition, promise to be an emotional night. Given the significance of the new date: September 11, at the UBS Arena in New York. The VMAs will also take on a charitable focus, working in collaboration with the National Day of Service and Remembrance of 9/11 and Tuesday’s Children.

Katy Perry’s presence as both an honoree and performer at the event is a surefire sign of success. The star might choose to perform ‘Women’s World’ or ‘Lifetimes,’ singles from her album 143.
In the first round of confirmed performers, the MTV VMAs announced international stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Rauw Alejandro, Glorilla, Camila Cabello, and Chappell Roan. This year, Taylor Swift is the clear favorite, leading with 10 nominations across both general and technical categories. Post Malone follows with 9 nominations, while Eminem has 6. Other standouts include Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and rising star Chappell Roan.
“With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display live on the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-encompassing performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits,” said Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Talent Programming and Events at Paramount.
Since Katy Perry’s debut with One of the Boys on Capitol Records in 2008, she’s racked up 115 billion streams and sold over 70 million albums and 143 million songs worldwide. Beyond being one of the best-selling music artists of all time, the Californian is also a dedicated advocate for various philanthropic causes. In 2013, Katy was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has used her platform to fight for every child’s right to health, education, equality, and protection.
