Selena Gomez is one of the world’s most influential celebrities. She’s made her mark in film, television, and even the business world, with a fortune and over 425 million Instagram followers. But despite her life in the spotlight, there’s a deeply personal side she hadn’t shared until now: she can’t have children.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Selena, who’s Emmy-nominated for her role in Only Murders in the Building, opened up about several health issues that prevent her from getting pregnant naturally. “I haven’t ever said this,” she says, “but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she revealed, reflecting on the tough reality she’s had to come to terms with.

Selena has battled lupus, an autoimmune disease that took her away from the spotlight for a while. In 2017, she received a kidney transplant from her friend Francia Raísa. She’s also been open about her mental health struggles, including being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Despite everything, Selena stays positive and grateful.
“I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she shared.
While Selena always imagined having a family the traditional way, she’s now embracing the different paths that can help her make that dream come true. Inspired by her mother’s story, who was also adopted, Selena sees adoption as a real possibility in her life. “I probably wouldn’t be here. I don’t know what her life would’ve been like. She and I are very thankful for how life played out,” she said.
On a personal note, Selena’s relationship with music producer Benny Blanco is also going strong. While marriage isn’t a focus right now, both are committed to protecting their relationship.
“I want him to always be himself. I always want to be myself,” the actress explained, making it clear that her identity remains firm. “I’m not changing my name no matter what. I am Selena Gomez. That’s it.”
