The MTV Video Music Awards, known as the VMAs, are one of the most prominent events in the global music scene. Since their inception in 1984, they have served as a platform to celebrate the best in music and music videos, highlighting both established artists and emerging talent. The gala, famous for its live performances and iconic moments, has become a cultural reference point, setting trends and reflecting the evolution of the music industry. This year’s ceremony promises to be especially exciting, with a strong presence of Latin artists who have made an indelible mark on global music.
The success of Latin music at the coveted awards comes as no surprise, given the impact and popularity it has gained in recent years. Artists like Shakira, Bad Bunny, and Karol G have brought Latin rhythms to all corners of the world, breaking language and cultural barriers. With its diverse genres and styles, Latin music has captivated both critics and global audiences, and its presence at the VMAs is a testament to its influence and relevance. This year, the Latin nominees and performers will not only compete for coveted awards but also deliver unforgettable performances, celebrating the richness and dynamism of Spanish-language music.
While this is one of the editions with the most Latin artist representation, Bad Bunny is the only one to appear in the Artist of the Year category, despite the global relevance of stars like Karol G. The Puerto Rican artist shares the category with heavyweights like Ariana Grande, Eminem, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, and Taylor Swift.
However, Rauw Alejandro and Anitta lead the Latin artists’ nominatios with three each. Both are in the Best Latin category, with the Brazilian nominated for ‘Mil Veces’ and ‘Bellakeo’ alongside Peso Pluma. The artist from San Juan is nominated for ‘Touching the Sky,’ which also earned nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Choreography. Anitta is also up for Best Editing for ‘Mil Veces,’ alongside Nick Yumul.
In the Latin artists’ category, we once again find Bad Bunny with ‘MONACO,’ Karol G with the regional Mexican hit ‘MI EX TENÍA RAZÓN,’ Myke Towers with ‘LALA,’ and Shakira and Cardi B with ‘Puntería.’
Among the Latin artists acts at this year’s MTV VMAs, we have the queen of Brazilian funk, Anitta, who is expected to perform ‘Savage Funk’ and her viral hit ‘Alegría,’ with Tiago PZK as a guest artist. Camila Cabello will likely dazzle with a showcase of songs from her latest album, C, XOXO.
Karol G will also be present, having delivered an impressive choreography last year, led by Paris Goebel, for her performances of ‘Oki Doki’ and ‘Tá Ok.’ This year, she is expected to perform her global hit ‘Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido.’
Additionally, Rauw Alejandro will delight the audience with what is likely one of his latest tracks, such as ‘Touching The Sky’ or ‘Déjame Entrar.’ The Puerto Rican artist is expected to debut a performance from his fifth studio album, inspired by West Side Story and Broadway.
It’s also worth noting that there is speculation that Rosalía might join her friend and colleague LISA, the Blackpink star, for a performance of their powerful August collaboration, ‘NEW WOMAN.’
