The Met Gala is an immensely famous event held annually. It’s held on the first Monday of May, so this year, in 2024, it’s on Monday, May 6. This year, it’ll celebrate the new Costume Institute exhibition called “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Vogue Latin America has announced that their upcoming issue will focus on exploring vintage fashion, including pieces too old to be worn, and how artificial intelligence is changing the fashion industry and our perception of nature.

This night is always a big deal because of the celebrities’ outfits, which have to match the theme. Have you ever wondered which Latin artists have been invited to this event? We’ll spill the beans.

2023

Bad Bunny, Anitta, Maluma

Last year, in 2023, the Met Gala honored Karl Lagerfeld with the theme “A Line of Beauty” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Lagerfeld, the renowned German designer and creative force behind Chanel, passed away on February 19, 2019. However, his influence extended beyond Chanel; he also worked with brands like Balmain, Chloé, and Fendi, and even had his own fashion label. So, attendees paid homage to Lagerfeld’s various career phases.

2022

Bad Bunny, Anitta, J Balvin

The 2022 edition, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” marked the second part of the Metropolitan Museum’s special focus on American fashion. The preceding year, 2021, saw the first part. In this edition, Bad Bunny made his debut at the prestigious event. Collaborating with Riccardo Tisci and Burberry, Bunny’s outfit, as he explained to Vogue, played with both masculine and feminine elements. It was a bold choice, but Bunny isn’t one to shy away from pushing boundaries.

2021

Anitta, J Balvin, Maluma

The 2021 Met Gala took place on September 13 due to COVID-19, showcasing the Costume Institute’s exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” The exhibition opened to the public on September 18 at the Anna Wintour Costume Center. This year, Anitta made her debut at the event, stunning in an elegant black dress featuring a striking back neckline and a sensual slit on her right leg.

2019

Maluma

In this edition, you might recall Lady Gaga‘s enormous big dress that changed multiple times as she walked the red carpet. Or perhaps you remember Kendall Jenner’s exotic orange feathered outfit. And who could forget Zendaya‘s Cinderella dress that seemed to change with every step?

Well, that event was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on Camp,” where she explored the essence of camp style: artificiality, exaggeration, and playfulness. Making his debut, Maluma arrived in a white suit adorned with rhinestones, showcasing a perfect blend of elegance and extravagance.

Despite their frequent presence, many Latin celebrities or those with Latin heritage have also graced the Met Gala. This includes acclaimed actresses like Salma Hayek and Eiza González, along with Chilean actor Pedro Pascal.

Among the music industry, Mexican singer Thalía, known for hits like «Amor A La Mexicana», as well as Camila Cabello and JLo, have made appearances. As Latin music continues to soar in popularity, we anticipate seeing more stars from the Latin music scene at future Met Gala events.
