Thalía Reveals the Hidden Message of ‘Amor a la Mexicana’ after 26 years

The song has been an anthem for more than one generation, but a lot of fans didn’t know the actual spicy meaning behind the lyrics

It’s been more than 20 years since the release of the famous song “Amor a la Mexicana but apparently a lot of people didn’t know the hidden message behind the lyrics.  

Thalía’s timeless anthem, «Amor a la mexicana,» has left an indelible mark not only on her discography but also in the hearts of countless generations of Mexican music enthusiasts. This song was the lead single from her fifth 1997 studio album, that shares the same name.

Thalía’s modernized outfit, which combines elements from traditional Mexican costumes with contemporary fashion trends, results in a captivating blend of styles that pays tribute to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage in a fresh and unique way. The music video was directed by Benny Corral. 

Although it is a Latin pop song, it blends the vibrant essence of Mexican music, infusing two prominent rhythms, cumbia and mariachi, accompanied by guitars and trumpets. This unique mix gives the song its distinctive flavor, capturing the rich musical heritage of Mexico. It has become one of Thalía’s signature songs, and a true classic in Latin music that continues to be present. 

The singer shared a humorous video on her TikTok account, which turned out to be quite revealing for many.

In the clip we see Tommy Mottola’s wife smiling, painting her nails and enjoying a dessert, accompanied by the message: Yo viendo como les cae el 20 de mi canción de hace 26 años. Referring to the fact that she was watching (and kind of enjoying) that people were just realizing the meaning of her song. During the recording, the artist has a carefree attitude and meanwhile some verses of the song are played, she laughs mischievously. 

    Suavecito quiero, bien rudo lo quiero. Quiero que me llegue hasta el fondo del corazón. Lento yo lo quiero, siempre más yo quiero. Quiero que me espante hasta perder la razón. Pura caña, puro amor”

The lyrics could be translated something like: «I want it smooth, I want it very rough. I want it to reach the bottom of my heart. I want it slow, I always want more. I want you to scare me out of my mind. Pure cane, pure love…»
