In a shocking legal development, music industry titans Shawn «Jay-Z» Carter and Sean «Diddy» Combs, both 55, have been named in a civil lawsuit filed under New York City’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act.
The lawsuit alleges that a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted at an afterparty for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The accuser, now 37, claims she was drugged and assaulted by Diddy and another male celebrity while a female celebrity watched. Jay-Z have denied the allegations, calling them unfounded attempts at attention.
Jay-Z dismissed the allegations as «idiotic,» stating that he comes from a background where protecting children is a fundamental value. Meanwhile, Sean «Diddy» Combs has consistently denied all claims of sexual assault and misconduct. He has also pleaded not guilty to the federal criminal charges, which include accusations of sex trafficking and racketeering.
The lawsuit was filed by Houston-based personal injury attorney Tony Buzbee, who has previously brought at least 20 sexual assault cases against Sean «Diddy» Combs. Buzbee utilized a variety of methods to find clients, including a dedicated hotline, Instagram outreach, and a press conference, according to The New York Times. Combs is currently confronting federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, along with over 30 lawsuits accusing him of various forms of sexual misconduct.
The alleged incident took place in 2000 at a private Manhattan residence hosting an afterparty. According to court documents, the accuser felt disoriented after drinking at the event and went to a bedroom to rest. She claims that Diddy and another male celebrity followed her, where the assault occurred. The accuser states the trauma from this event caused her lasting psychological harm, including depression and PTSD.
According to NBC, the lawsuit states that Jane Doe’s legal representatives contacted Jay-Z, requesting «a mediation to address and resolve this matter.»
“Upon present information and belief, Jay-Z responded to said letter by not only filing an utterly frivolous lawsuit, but by also orchestrating a conspiracy of harassment, bullying and intimidation against Plaintiff’s lawyers, their families, employees and former associates in an attempt to silence Plaintiff from naming Jay-Z herein. This effort was meant to scare Plaintiff and to discredit her counsel. That effort failed. Indeed, Plaintiff chose to file this amendment as a result of the egregious conduct perpetuated by Carter,” according to the lawsuit.
In an extensive statement, Jay-Z conveyed his denial and reflections regarding the accusation, questioning Buzbee’s professionalism and the validity of his arguments.
“It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!,” the statement read.
The statement went on to say: “My heart and support goes out to true victims in the world, who have to watch how their life story is dressed in costume for profitability by this ambulance chaser in a cheap suit. You have made a terrible error in judgment thinking that all ‘celebrities’ are the same. I’m not from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of the project of Brooklyn. We don’t play these types of games.”
Jay-Z’s reputation as a hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur is undeniable, but his career has also been marred by several controversies:
The rapper faced backlash for his extensive collaborations with R. Kelly, a singer notorious for allegations of sexual abuse. Their joint albums, The Best of Both Worlds (2002) and Unfinished Business (2004), were released despite growing public awareness of R. Kelly’s predatory behavior, including his illegal marriage to a 15-year-old Aaliyah and later allegations of child pornography and sexual misconduct. Industry peers criticized Jay-Z for continuing to work with Kelly, particularly after the latter’s indictment in 2002.
Jay-Z’s defense of Kelly during this period—emphasizing that he hoped Kelly would seek help—led to accusations of enabling harmful behavior. Although their professional relationship soured after a public fallout during their 2004 tour, the initial collaborations remain a controversial chapter in Jay-Z’s career.
In 1999, Jay-Z was involved in a stabbing case against record producer Lance “Un” Rivera at a nightclub after a dispute over bootlegged music. While he has expressed regret for the incident, critics point to it as an example of his willingness to resort to violence.
Beyond allegations of physical and sexual misconduct, Jay-Z has also been scrutinized for his personal behavior, particularly his admitted infidelity to his wife, Beyoncé. In his album 4:44 and subsequent interviews, he acknowledged the pain his actions caused, further complicating his public image.
These allegations against Jay-Z and Diddy come at a time when accountability is increasingly demanded from powerful figures in the entertainment industry. Diddy has faced a slew of lawsuits in recent weeks, with claims ranging from sexual assault to financial manipulation. The inclusion of Jay-Z in this latest legal filing underscores how historic behaviors and associations can resurface in ways that challenge legacies.
Both men have denied any wrongdoing and are preparing robust legal defenses. Their representatives argue that these lawsuits are opportunistic attempts to exploit their fame for financial gain. However, as more allegations emerge, public opinion may shift, demanding greater accountability regardless of the outcome in court
