«We no longer call it regional mexicano, we call it música mexicana», introduced Daniel Luna, Director of Música Mexicana at Warner, referring to the successful DannyLux, emphasizing that the success of this genre has acquired its own independent character. And precisely, DannyLux is one of the members of a new generation of artists that is revolutionizing Mexican music, currently being one of the most listened genres in the world.

That’s why Warner, in collaboration with Los40 Urban, wanted to treat us to an exclusive showcase with Mexican artists yesterday in Madrid (Spain), in an intimate and cozy atmosphere – with great music, but also tequila and tacos – where we could hear their songs firsthand. They all come from national music but have their own style with different variations: from the mariachi of Franco Rey to the Mexican reggaeton of Yng Lucas, passing through the ‘alternative’ regional style of ElArturo.

The Global Success of Mexican Music

These artists represent the consolidation of the Latin music boom that currently dominates the charts, even in the United States, where Anglo-American artists have always prevailed. But what has changed the game?

«I think having a unique personality has been what has transformed everything. Peso Pluma is an example of that; you’ll always see him being funny and bringing his own style to his music, his lyrics, and even the instruments he uses», DannyLux comments to Los40.

Precisely, Peso Pluma, a popular icon of Mexican music in the United States and Latin America, has also gained great relevance in Spain after his session #55 with Bizarrap. It is the first time the Argentine producer collaborates with a regional mexicano artist, shifting his focus towards the so-called corridos tumbados (a variant of traditional music that combines urban rhythms).

However, the first time the artist made it onto the charts in our country was alongside Yng Lvcas in ‘La Bebe – Remix’. A track that the Mexican has re-released with none other than David Guetta, and he performed it again yesterday, making some of the attendees dance to the ground.

But this generational change in the scene is also related to an attitude and the conception that new artists, many of whom come from social media platforms like TikTok, have towards making music. «In the industry, there is a lot of culture of stepping on others to prevent their success, of not helping each other. Besides, when you’re an artist, you’re emotionally very unstable, and it’s difficult to handle. But I believe that the young artists entering now are changing all that Franco Rey, the author of the successful song ‘Así Me Enamoré,’ told us. He would like to collaborate with artists like David Bisbal or Aitana in Spain.

These new promises have managed to even take advantage of the obstacles they encounter when building a career in the industry. In fact, as ElArturo himself tells us, whose debut album ‘Y Qué’ has been acclaimed by Rolling Stone, many of the variations of traditional music that we see succeeding now in figures like Peso Pluma or Natanael Cano are a product of the lack of resources and their ingenuity in approaching them with new styles. «Producing a song is very expensive, especially in regional Mexican music where there are so many instruments and you don’t have the money to pay so many people. In the end, new ways of doing it with less emerge, creating other styles,» explains the artist.

A night that undoubtedly leaves us eager to know what the next successes will be that we will soon see climbing the charts on Lista Los40 USA.
