Three months after initially confirming its intentions to develop the app, Threads has finally arrived.
The new social platform, built on Instagram –a subsidiary of Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, and positioned as a competitor to Elon Musk’s Twitter–, reached an impressive 10 million users in just 7 hours. Including a significant number of celebrities, brands, journalists, and other high-profile accounts.
A free social network that has extended its character limit to 500, as compared to Twitter’s 280, and allows video uploads of up to five minutes (vs 2:20 minutes of open Twitter). One of the main differentiators is that Threads allows you to hide your “likes”, same as Instagram posts.

No information has been released about a potentially paid version of the new service, and this sparked discussions on social media about Twitter’s restrictions and fees.
Undeniably, one of the most distinguishing features between the two platforms is that unlike Musk’s network, you can’t see trending topics on Threads. In fact, access is limited to the feeds of users you follow, or those you search for, with their posts appearing on a main screen.
Another difference is that Twitter provides a feature to filter your feed based on the accounts you follow, and it also allows you to save drafts.
The registration process is simple. If you already have an Instagram profile, you can sign up directly and even allows you to import your profile photo and the list of people you follow.
Following the launch, it has been revealed that the Irish Data Protection Commission has not yet approved the new social network. This is due to the platform’s use of various types of personal user data such as:
These data types are regarded as sensitive by the European Union. As a result, for now, the platform will only be available in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and others where the regulatory frameworks are not as stringent in this regard.
If you decide to delete Threads, your Instagram profile would be deleted too.
So, what do you think about this new social platform? Do you think it will be a competence for Twitter?
