Mean Girls has become a symbol of 2000s culture. It starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried, and wasn’t just a hit when it first came out it’s also now considered one of the best teen movies ever. Lines like “Get in, loser. We’re going shopping,” and “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” are now part of many people’s common knowledge. Not to mention that October 3rd is known as ‘Mean Girls’ Day.

In 2024, on the film’s 20th anniversary, a new version will be released in theaters, and it’s a musical! Tina Fey, one of the original screenwriters, was behind it again, this time also taking on the role of executive producer, besides reprising her character, teacher Sharon Norbury.

Mean Girls, a Musical?

This new Mean Girls draws heavily from the 2018 Broadway musical adaptation, so the songs are new versions of those from the stage production. The movie, as revealed in the final trailer, is scheduled to hit theaters on January 12th. It’s worth mentioning that we can hear Olivia Rodrigo‘s latest single, «get him back,» as part of the trailer’s soundtrack. The cast includes Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey in the lead roles of this fresh take, and it also features well-known names like John Hamm (Mad Men) and Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty).

Similarities & Differences

In this new Mean Girls version, aside from being a musical, there are some notable differences we’ve glimpsed in the trailer. The story now takes place in modern times, not the early 2000s like the original. So, we’ll see smartphones in the school hallways. And while some scenes stay true to the original, others have been tweaked.

Another interesting change is that the new cast is more diverse. Back in the early 2000s, the entire main cast was white. Now, twenty years later, there’s a lot more diversity. We’ll have to wait and see how this new version of the film turns out. Admittedly, it’s a tough act to follow the original. Let’s hope they give us an entertaining twist on the same story.
