Who is Edgar Barrera?

Edgar Barrera was born on April 18, 1990, in McAllen, Texas, but his early years were spent in the Municipality of Miguel Alemán, situated in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. He called this place home until he reached the age of 15. His father, Luis Alberto Barrera, held the role of director and second vocalist in a local musical group known as Mister Chivo. It was his father’s musical influence that ignited Edgar’s interest in music.

Edgar’s journey into music began with him learning to play the guitar. He used a methodical guide called ‘Cancioneros,’ which he could conveniently purchase from newsstands each month. For El País, Barrera recalls that his first successful guitar performance was a song by the Argentine band Soda Stereo. In addition to refining his guitar skills, Barrera participated in a school competition where he showed his talent by performing the song «Samba pa ti» by Santana.

While my friends were playing with their Game Boy consoles, I found my true passion in the guitar.

Destined for Success

At the age of 20, Edgar Barrera decided to pursue a career as a recording engineer in Miami, but his exceptional talent quickly gained recognition. He collaborated with notable artists like Carlos Vives, Thalia, Prince Royce, and David Bustamante during his early years. In an interview with El País, the composer pointed to 2015 as a crucail year when he began working on major hits like «Sin contrato» by Maluma, «Loco enamorado» featuring Farruko, Abraham Mateo, and Christian Daniel, and «Hey DJ» performed by CNCO and Yandel.

Since then, Barrera’s impressive resume has been defined by his work as a producer and composer for a diverse range of artists, including renowned names such as Bad Bunny, Alejandro Sanz, Marc Anthony, Daddy Yankee, Becky G, Pablo Alborán, India Martínez, and even Ariana Grande. He composed and produced Jennifer Lopez’s hit «El Anillo,» contributed to «Medellín,» the Madonna-Maluma collaboration, crafted «Delincuente» for Sebastián Yatra and Jhaico, and played a significant role in «Gucci Los Paños,» one of the standout tracks from Colombian sensation Karol G’s latest album, Mañana será bonito.

We are very excited to be nominated, and it’s also a source of pride being Mexican, especially with everything happening in this movement of Mexican music. To be the most nominated, and to be a Mexican, well, for me, it’s also a part of that pride.”
