Daddy Yankee Gets Emotional About «Gasolina» After Receiving Good News

An anthem that marked a before and after in the reggaeton scene

Archivado en: Daddy Yankee  •

Daddy Yankee is undoubtedly one of the founding fathers of reggaeton. His songs have crossed borders, writing the first pages of the history of one of the most listened to genres in the present. As he noted in an iconic Billboard interview: «Nosotros lo creamos» («We created it»).

His inmortal hit ‘Gasolina‘ (2010) is considered one of the best Latin music anthems of all times. Even with the passage of time, whenever it’s played at any party, its attendees cannot help but react with collective emotion. Almost 20 years have passed since its release, but ‘Gasolina‘ is still making history.

The Story Behind ‘Gasolina’

The National Recording Registry of the U.S. Library of Congress recognized ‘Gasolina‘ as the first reggaeton song that has transformed culture and changed musical history. An honor that Daddy Yankee himself wanted to highlight with some nice words on his social media.

Daddy wrote the following words in his Instagram profile:

«For that ‘chamaco’ who grew up in Santurce, «Gasolina» was born in a neighborhood of Puerto Rico; be recognized by the ‘Library of Congress’ as one of the songs that transformed the culture, changed the musical history in the world and the U.S. is something I never dreamed of. And the most beautiful thing is that it was in Spanish. When you do things with love, passion, determination and discipline and, to all that, you add the support of all my beautiful people for more than three decades everything you dream of can be possible»Daddy Yankee

As expected, the news has also been celebrated by his followers and lovers of a genre he has pioneered. «The best of all time,» says one of them. «Much respect every day to you. Everything you accomplish is impressive,» adds another.

Although Yankee already announced his retirement after releasing last album ‘Legendaddy‘ (2022), music will forever be a vital part of his life. The power of reggaeton has been accompanying him for decades and has allowed him to fulfill all those dreams he once thought of. For this reason, he has continued to drop music and collaborate with other artists. ‘La hora y el día‘ featuring Justin Quiles and Dalex, ‘Ulala‘ with Myke Towers or ‘Panties y Brassieres‘ ft. Rauw Alejandro are some of the last hits in which he has participated.

And you, can you imagine a world without Daddy Yankee? And without ‘Gasolina’? Because we really can’t!
