Culture’s biggest entertainment event took place last night, June 25, at the 2023 BET Awards, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony aims to honor black entertainers and underrepresented communities dedicated to music, sports, television, and movies.
Canadian rapper Drake led the nominations with seven, but Beyoncé and SZA showcased girl power by tying for the most awards won, each receiving three. They both won Album of the Year for their respective albums ‘Renaissance’ and ‘SOS.’ Beyoncé also received the Viewer’s Choice Award for her song ‘Break My Soul,’ while SZA’s chart-topping hit ‘Kill Bill’ earned her the Video of the Year award. Additionally, Chris Brown and Usher tied for the title of Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, highlighting their remarkable contributions to the genre.
The 2023 BET Awards show paid tribute to the 40th anniversary of hip-hop with a lineup that included dozens of performers. The epic lineup included opener Lil Uzi Vert, as well as hip-hop pioneers The Sugarhill Gang. Other notable hip-hop figures such as Bia, Coi Leray, Cutty Ranks, Dexta Daps, Ice Spice, M.O.P., Rah Digga, ScarLip, Spice, Supercat, Swizz Beatz and Tyga also graced the stage.
Memorable moments included tributes to Tupac Shakur and Takeoff, with the latter being honored by his Migos bandmates Quavo and Offset. Additionally, Warren G delivered a captivating performance of ‘Regulate.’ Busta Rhymes received a well-deserved lifetime tribute and treated the audience to a medley of his hits. Patti Labelle paid homage to Tina Turner by singing ‘(Simply) The Best,’ although she momentarily forgot the words during a few moments.
During the telecast on Sunday night, six awards were presented. Latto received the honor of Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Coco Jones accepted the award for Best New Artist in person. Teyana Taylor’s mother, Nikki, connected with her daughter via FaceTime during the broadcast to inform her that she had won Video Director of the Year.
