The 83rd Golden Globe Awards were held on Sunday, January 11 at the iconic Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California (U.S.), in an evening marked by a lack of major surprises, with awards distributed fairly evenly and an atmosphere full of emotion and sophistication.

Organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the ceremony honored the best of film and television from the past year, cementing its status as one of the most important stops on the awards calendar. The most coveted prizes went to Hamnet, the adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, which was named Best Drama Motion Picture, and One Battle After Another, which led the nominations with nine and ended up winning four awards, including Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Even so, despite being a film about authoritarianism in the United States, the ceremony was almost completely apolitical.

Although Sentimental Value, by Joachim Trier, had eight nominations, it only converted one into a win, taking Best Supporting Actor for Stellan Skarsgård, who was honored for the first time at age 74. The Norwegian film, which was the second-most nominated of the night after One Battle After Another, walked away with only that prize.

K-Pop Warriors won two statuettes—Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden”—giving the Korean film a strong start to awards season.

The Golden Globe for Best Non-English-Language Film went to the Brazilian movie, beating Sirāt by Oliver Laxe.

And on the television side, Adolescence reigned supreme, winning Best Miniseries and taking home four awards, including Owen Cooper’s.
