Why Snoop Dogg Is Facing Renewed Criticism Over Homophobia

A movie trip turned into a controversy, adding to past accusations of homophobia against him

Lola Rabal—Snoop Dogg has once again found himself at the center of public conversation after making comments that sparked debate. During an appearance on It’s Giving Podcast, the rapper shared a story about going to the movies with his grandson to watch Lightyear, the 2022 Pixar release.

The film, created as a spin-off of the Toy Story universe to tell the story of the hero who inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy, came with its own controversy: it was banned in at least 14 countries due to the inclusion of a same-sex couple and an openly queer relationship. While many viewers praised it as a step forward for diversity and representation, for Snoop Dogg, it turned into a moment of discomfort.

Instead of using the opportunity to address his grandson’s questions naturally, the rapper admitted he felt unsettled—and even intimidated—by what was happening in the movie. “‘They just said, she and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby?’”

Snoop said, “It f**ked me up. “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Pixar Intentions

While Pixar aimed to show a kind of representation that reflects real family dynamics, Snoop Dogg reduced the moment to nothing more than awkward silence—sending the message that this type of content is a problem rather than an educational opportunity.

The contrast is striking, especially considering his cultural influence. An artist with decades in the spotlight, shaping music and pop culture, admitting he’s hesitant to return to the movies simply because the film pushed him into a conversation about diversity.

Snoop Dogg and His Past Homophobia Controversies

However, this isn’t the first time Snoop Dogg has made headlines in connection to the LGBTQ+ community. Back in 2017, the release of his ‘Moment I Feared’ music video sparked a wave of backlash online. In it, the rapper mocked a caricatured character that many saw as a direct jab at fellow artist Young Thug.

In one of the scenes, after portraying the character with exaggerated mannerisms, Snoop turns to him and asks, “Are you gay?”—a mocking tone that immediately sparked controversy. As music critic Ben Beaumont-Thomas noted in The Guardian, the video and lyrics were “blatantly homophobic” and highlighted how some musicians still resist a culture moving toward greater inclusion.

The journalist also pointed out that this wasn’t an isolated incident in the Californian artist’s career. Years earlier, in 2014, Snoop had already faced backlash for offensive comments on Instagram. This happened after posting a photo of two men in bed accompanied by derogatory captions.
