Who Is Shane Devon Tamura, the New York City Shooting Attacker?

The attack unfolded rapidly, leaving the city in a state of shock. The motives are still under investigation

A 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, was behind Monday’s deadly shooting at a high-rise building in Midtown Manhattan, in which five people lost their lives, including a police officer and the gunman himself. Tamura is believed to have acted alone and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent office tower that houses the headquarters of several major companies, including the National Football League (NFL), Blackstone, and KPMG. The attack unfolded rapidly and left the city in a state of shock.

Authorities said a note found in Tamura’s pocket included several pages. One page accused the NFL of hiding the risks of brain injuries to players in pursuit of profit. Another referenced CTE — a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma — and placed blame on football. A third page reportedly read, “Study my brain please. I’m sorry.”

A Methodical and Lethal Assault

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Tamura arrived at the building shortly after 6 p.m. driving a BMW he had used to travel across the country. He double-parked outside the building and entered with an M4-style semi-automatic rifle. Surveillance footage shows him shooting an NYPD officer at point-blank range almost immediately upon entering the lobby.

He then opened fire on civilians, killing three people and seriously injuring at least one more. After taking an elevator to the 33rd floor—home to the real estate firm Rudin Management—Tamura continued firing indiscriminately before fatally shooting himself in the chest.

The slain police officer was identified as Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh and father of two, with a third child on the way. He had been serving in the 47th Precinct in the Bronx for three and a half years.

«Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy», the New York Police Department communicated via X after the incident.

Mayor Eric Adams called the shooting a “despicable act of violence” and described Officer Islam as a “hero who gave his life to protect others.” “The entire event is still under investigation, and we’re working with our partners at the FBI”, he added.

Shane Tamura’s background is now under intense scrutiny. Originally from Hawaii, he spent his later years in Las Vegas, where he worked in a casino. He had a documented history of mental health issues, according to officials. Prescription medications and a loaded revolver were found in his vehicle, along with a rifle case and multiple ammunition magazines.

Tamura had no known criminal record but did possess a Nevada-issued concealed carry permit and a now-expired private investigator’s license. In recent days, he had driven across the United States, with license plate records tracking his route through Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey, culminating in his arrival in Manhattan on the day of the attack.

Unclear Motives, Unanswered Questions

While authorities have yet to determine Tamura’s exact motives, early reports suggest he may have left behind a written note expressing grievances related to brain trauma from his years as a high school football player. His connections to the NFL remain speculative and unconfirmed.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that one NFL employee was seriously injured in the attack and is currently in stable condition. “We are deeply grateful to law enforcement and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others,” Goodell said in a statement to staff.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has opened an internal inquiry into whether Tamura had any previous links to the department, following unverified reports circulating online. Tamura had attended Granada Hills Charter High School in Los Angeles, where he played football during his senior year.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York have taken over the investigation and pledged to use “the full force” of their resources to uncover any further details. Authorities are also reviewing building security protocols and Tamura’s digital footprint.

The 345 Park Avenue building, which was locked down during the assault, has since been cleared. Nearby buildings had issued emergency alerts instructing occupants to shelter in place.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. «It felt like a war zone,» said one bystander who helped an injured victim flee the plaza. Cellphone videos captured NYPD officers rushing into the building, as glass shattered and crowds ran for safety.
