The 77th edition of the Emmy Awards, held this past Sunday night, September 15, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, has already been dubbed the “awkward Emmys” for crowning series that are challenging to watch—yet undeniably excellent.

While past favorites like The White Lotus and The Bear walked away empty-handed, Academy members instead turned to breakout series that many viewers had barely heard of before this season.

Beyond Netflix’s now-iconic Adolescence—which dominated with six awards, including Best Supporting Actor for 15-year-old Owen Cooper, the youngest ever winner in the category, delivering a speech that went viral worldwide—two other series stole the spotlight.

(It’s worth noting that in that same category, Javier Bardem was also nominated, though he didn’t win. Still, he made headlines with his outspoken remarks on the “genocide in Gaza” while walking the red carpet.)

The two biggest winners of the night were The Pitt and The Studio, crowned Best Drama and Best Comedy, leaving many viewers stunned—wondering where these shows came from and what they’re actually about.

Here’s everything you need to know: where to watch them, how many episodes they have, and what stories they tell.

The Pitt: Best Drama, the Heir to ER

One of the most original—and most demanding—series of the year, The Pitt is a medical drama in which each episode unfolds in real time, following a single one-hour shift (the same length as the episode) in the emergency department of a Pittsburgh hospital.

Balancing personal crises, workplace politics, the emotional toll of treating patients in critical condition, and the relentless pace of the ER, the show throws viewers into the chaos, making them feel like they’re right there in the room—minus the smells.

The first season of The Pitt—with a second already in the works—spans 15 episodes, covering 15 consecutive hours in the lives of ER staff.

The Emmy-winning drama, which picked up five awards, is streaming now on HBO Max.

The Studio: Best Comedy and a Raw Reflection of Hollywood

It’s already made history as the comedy series with the most Emmys ever won in a single night: 13 statuettes.

Created by and starring Seth Rogen, The Studio consists of 10 episodes available on Apple TV+. The show holds up a mirror to the traditional film industry and its desperate fight to stay relevant.

The series follows Matt and his team of executives as they battle insecurities, deal with narcissistic artists and corporate overlords, and chase the elusive dream of making “great movies.” Dressed in suits to mask their constant panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting, and awards show teeters between brilliant success and total disaster.
