Nearly 20 years after their first big-screen adventure, America’s favorite animated family is coming back to theaters. The Simpsons Movie sequel is officially in the works and is set to premiere on July 23, 2027, 20th Century Studios has confirmed. The announcement has sparked excitement among fans who have been waiting years to see Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie return to the big screen.
The news broke during a special event in Los Angeles celebrating the 35th anniversary of the iconic series. While plot details are being kept under wraps, producers teased that the film will feature an all-new story packed with Easter eggs for longtime fans, while still being accessible to audiences who haven’t kept up with the show.
Several key creatives from the original 2007 movie are back for the sequel. Executive producer Al Jean will lead the project alongside David Silverman, who directed the first film. Writers Mike Reiss and Matt Selman are also on board, with series creator Matt Groening overseeing the creative process.
In interviews with Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Jean promised: “The story will be more ambitious, but it will keep the irreverent humor that defines The Simpsons.” The original voice cast — Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, and Hank Azaria — are all confirmed to reprise their iconic roles.
Though the plot is still under wraps, insiders hint that the sequel will tackle timely themes such as artificial intelligence, digital culture, and climate change, all delivered through the show’s trademark satirical lens. Fans can also expect celebrity cameos and new characters, a long-standing Simpsons tradition.
The first Simpsons Movie in 2007 was a massive hit, grossing over $530 million worldwide and earning praise from critics for blending sharp social commentary with heartfelt family moments.
With more than 750 episodes aired and dozens of awards under its belt, The Simpsons remains one of the most influential shows in television history. The upcoming sequel is part of a broader expansion of the franchise, which also includes new streaming specials and interactive projects currently in development, according to Variety.
